In 1991, the track was in perfect shape. It served athletes as a durable surface and enabled them to improve their skills. By early 2009 instead of helping, the track hurt.
In early June, the worn-out, tire-recycled track was ripped up. Over the course of the summer the track was replaced by a thicker, rubberized surface. According to Paul Carper, director of construction and planning, resurfacing the track cost $280,000.
“When you have a top-notch school, you want top-notch facilities,” head track coach Jim Triemplar said.
According to Triemplar, safety was a major reason for resurfacing the track. There was concern that athletes would trip where the track had worn down to asphalt. The high quality and thick surface will also protect against shin splints and other injuries, senior Daniel Owecki is excited about having fewer injuries.
“[I am] Most excited about being able to see all the lines and markings on the track and being able to run on it at home meets,” year-round track athlete, senior Kati Peak said
The condition of the previous track made hosting meets a slim chance. With the new track, home meets will gradually increase.
In 2009, the boy’s indoor team was crowned regional champions. In past years, the girls and boys track teams have won numerous district and regional titles. With this past success, the track teams can look to the future and see what the new track can help them accomplish.
