There are many "Goodwill" organizations in the Green Bay area that help struggling families. Some of these organizations are The Giving Tree, Paul’s Pantry, Salvation Army, and Goodwill. There is one foundation that was founded for the Howard- Suamico students in mind, called the Howard- Suamico (HS) Education Foundation. Their vision consists of enhancing the educational opportunities for Howard- Suamico students and providing funds to students, teachers, administrators, parents, and school organizations.
Last year, the HS Education Foundation gave out four scholarships to Bay Port graduates and helped the DECA program by giving donations. Since the DECA club just started last year, it didn’t have a lot of resources to work with. Two students qualified for the state and national competitions, and if DECA had not gotten the donations from the HS Education Foundation, some of the DECA students would not have been able to go to their qualifying competitions.
Lindsay Matuszewski, the DECA advisor, said, "I think the Howard-Suamico Education Foundation is a great organization that has had a significant impact on the students at Bay Port High School."
Mary Karl, the Gifted and Talented Specialist for the Forest Glen and Suamico Elementary schools, has also received help from the HS Education Foundation for some of her ideas. One of her ideas was to start a webcasting project with students in the 2006-2007 school year. The foundation gave a donation that allowed the school to buy a "studio-quality" camera, tripod, microphones, and a mixer. Today, all fourth graders in Forest Glen get to spend two weeks in the makeshift television studio. They write scripts, interview staff and students, and create a news webcast that is shown to classrooms biweekly.
Karl stated, "The students look forward to their weeks in the studio and apply their language arts skills in a real life setting."
The foundation also helped support a project for Suamico Elementary School. The foundation helped buy ten Pico Cricket kits for the third grade classes at Suamico Elementary by supplying half of the money under the agreement that the Suamico Parent- Teacher Organization would pay the other half. The Pico Cricket kits help introduce engineering concepts in a way that younger kids can understand. Each of the kits include motors, lights, sound elements, and four different types of sensors, along with Lego pieces that allow students to build their own projects.
As a result of their efforts, the HS Education Foundation helps out the Howard - Suamico School District in the small things that people hardly notice. They provide the schools with monetary help and give students more opportunities than they normally would have had.
