Homecoming—the mere title brings to mind an eventful week full of noon games, spirit assemblies, football, and dances. The Bay Port student council puts in hours of preparation to make many students’ favorite week out of the school year a reality.
This year’s theme will be “Viva Las Vegas.” During the week, there will be dress up days as well as noon games that correspond to the theme. During each lunch hour, the four grades will compete in the noon games and try to earn the most points. The class with the most points by the end of the spirit assembly on Friday will receive one dollar off their ticket to the dance. The noon games and dress up days during the week include:
Monday: Paris (No dress up)
Tuesday: Caesar’s Place/Vegas Nights (Pajama Day)
Wednesday: Circus Circus/MGM Movie Star Day
Thursday: Casino Royale/Mandalay Bay Beach Day
Friday: Excalibur/Treasure Island (Pirate Pride Day)
The spirit assembly will be on Friday, with performances by the band, drum line, color guard, cheerleaders, and dance and football team. Of course, there will be the traditional obstacle course, and immediately after the assembly, gigzone will be playing.
According to student council vice-president Danny Stammer, “We are going to try and pep up the spirit assembly more than in the past years. We have to get excited for the Friday night football game against Manitowoc.”
At the football game, student council will be running a spirit tent, selling items such as body paint. In addition, raffle tickets for “the best seat in the house” will be sold for $1.00.
The dance will be in the Bay Port commons on Saturday, October 4th from 8-11:30. Tickets cost $8.00, and remember the winning class gets a dollar off their ticket!
Along with the normal events occurring at school during homecoming week, student council decided to provide extra activities to get the entire community involved.
To kick off homecoming week on Saturday, September 27, there will be an outdoor movie showing at Bay Port that the whole community is invited to watch. Admission is free, but there will be a canned food drive welcoming donations. Student council will also be running a concession stand.
Even local businesses can get involved during homecoming week. They may choose to decorate their businesses with the homecoming theme, and student council members will go around and judge them.
Students at Bay Port, seniors and freshman alike, are already getting pumped up for the week.
Senior Sam Baker said, “I’m excited for homecoming because it’s my last one. I’m going to go out with a bang and get all this crazy hair stuff and eye make-up—I’m going hog-wild!
Freshman Kelsi Watson said, “I think my first homecoming should be really fun. I’m kind of scared because I hear all these stories about being saran-rapped to trees and ketchup and mustarded, but I’m really excited to experience it so that I can tell these stories to next year’s freshmen.”
Homecoming is all about what students make of it, so get out and enjoy a week in Vegas!
