“This big d@#$ thing!” “It’s so huge” “It’s a dumb idea” are the comments we often hear about are one of our many hot topics at school: our binders! Many of us see the negative points of these binders but there are others who see no problems with them so all students know obviously who opposes and who agrees. The real question here is, what is the purpose of the binders?

An Avid senior student named Daniel Jauregui, agrees to the fact that we have binders since in Avid it is a requirement and we get them for free. Jauregui also believes that with these binders our Norte Vista students will be more organized. In addition, the problem he believes they will cause is students refusing to bring them. Although he supports the binder idea, he would like to change the fact that it is mandatory.

On the other hand, I interviewed Aurora Ambriz, also a senior at Norte Vista who opposes to the idea of the binders. In the interview, Ambriz said, “No, (to the binders) because it is heavy and big”, but her answer contradicts itself, because she believes the improvements will help students to not lose papers and everything will be in order. She predicts the problems with the binders are back problems due to the size and weight of them, which she also believes, should be changed.

Two teachers, one being Mrs. Graham and the other Ms. Sylva also participated in this topic. Both agreed that the binders were good ideas but Mrs. Graham was obviously in love in the idea. They also agreed that the binders will keep students organized and that they won’t have an excuse as to why they didn’t bring their homework. Mrs. Graham and Ms. Sylva think that the problem would be students not bringing their binders everyday. Mrs. Graham stated that “There should be no change with the binders” but Ms. Sylva in the other hand said, “The binders should be smaller.”

Ms. Boyd, our school principal was very pumped and excited about reinforcing the binder idea. She strongly feels that the binders will be key tool for students to be more successful in school. Additionally, binders will definitley keep the students organized and prepared. She also said “The only problem there would be is with the students not wanting to carry their binders all the time”. In addition, she explained to me that the binders are two inches and the Avid ones are three inches exact. What makes them look bigger than two inches or three inches is the volume inside the binders, which is meant for our papers that will fill the inside of our binders through the school year. Overall, Ms. Boyd was very enthusiastic about having the Novi Students carry binders to their first job- school!

These binders do seem big and it is a drag to want to carry them everyday but the purpose of the binders is not to torture us or punish us rather to help us improve academically and boost up our test scores whether it is the CAHSEE Test, State Test, AP Test or a test you get in English class. We all can succeed simply by taking the action step of having and carrying binders.

Better idea, make the binders bit smaller, thinner and less breakable because the rings break in one month start to wear down which makes us angry. Stop being cheap on us and start the situation with a class vote to see what to do with the binders.
