This year the classes in Spanish are being combined together; Spanish I and Spanish II are in one class, and then Spanish I with Spanish III in another class, and so forth, it may seem difficult to teach. Somehow though Mrs. Santos, Spanish teacher, has helped to make all this work.

Mrs. Santos has been teaching her classes the language, culture, and customs of the people in Spanish speaking countries. As she teaches these traditions to the classes, she also tries to find a way for the students to relate to the subject. The main way that she does this, is through the design and construction of projects.

“Spanish I students have created posters that display seasons, and created a power point or webpage that displayed their school, classes, and professors,” Mrs. Santos, said.

Spanish II has created a fashion magazines in Spanish. Also, they have made a Yo Soy book that talks about themselves and made brochures about the school.

And Spanish III?

“They have been working on brochures to highlight a place or park in Mexico and sculptures that represent their personalities,” Mrs. Santos, said. All projects are done in Spanish.

Other projects the classes have been working on are cooking food to experience the types of food people in Mexico would eat and cook, and making masks and decorations for when celebrations occur; such as “Cinco de Mayo” or “Dia de los Muertos.”

Every time the class starts a new chapter, they are assigned a project that goes along with it.

Just recently, Spanish III classes were to create a sculpture of some sort that described their personality. They were able to use anything laying around the house to create this project. Then, during the day of presentation when everyone presents their sculptures, they explained how that sculpture related to them in the Spanish language.

How did the whole presentation go?

“It has gone very well and everyone has been turning in their work like they are supposed to. A project I did was a microphone because I like to sing,” Maria Sandoval, senior, said.

A few students in the class find most of the learning more effective when doing the projects.

“I do enjoy doing projects in Mrs. Santos class. My Spanish vocabulary is getting better,” Logan Cook, senior, said.

Many of the projects on display in the Spanish class were very creative and Mrs. Santos has more projects planned for the future. The projects she plans on doing are cooking and making a few pinatas.

Who knows, we may have some students from Sabinal High School that are influenced by the Spanish culture, and can look back on their high school Spanish projects, and their entire Spanish experience for inspiration in life.

The Spanish classes are running smoothly, so keep up the good work Mrs. Santos. Also, students in Spanish I, II, and III keep on listening and working hard, because you never know when this experience will help later on.
