Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd. Ring any bells? They should, because these old school bands are making a big comeback into mainstream pop culture.

Recently, the powerful lyrics and screaming guitar riffs of the ‘60s and ‘70s are making a comeback through the headphones of students at York High. During the ‘60s, many bands such as the Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix were household names. Today, famous groups and people like Lenny Kravitz have modeled their style of music around these kinds of groups that brought screaming fans to concerts like Woodstock, where in 1969 bands like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Santana, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Grateful Dead, and The Who, played to 500,000 people over a period of three days.

The fashions of the ‘70s are also coming back in style. The long forgotten bellbottom pants have recently resurfaced through bands like Jet, who refuse to wear anything but bellbottoms and tight shirts, making them a striking resemblance to singers of the 70’s like Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin and Roger Daltry of The Who.

This neo-hippie revolution has not only swept today’s pop icons, but also the students at York High. At the top of the must-listen to list, the selection ranged from Aerosmith to the Doors to Grateful Dead. Kelly Knox(So.) says, “I like a lot of old bands, especially the Beatles, the Eagles and The Monkees.” Junior Brian Mandeville adds, “music from the sixties and seventies like the Beatles really speaks to me and has a mellow quality that music today lacks.” Freshman David Anton likes The Grateful Dead: “My favorite Band by far is the Grateful Dead, because I grew up listening to them and my parents listened to them so I naturally like them. They’re cool too because of all the exciting stuff they did on stage, like entrances and stuff.”

Clearly the students at York High love their old School Rock and Roll.
