Just this past year, Dr. Matt Robinson was hired to be Cameron School District’s Superintendent. It was decided recently, however, this job was entirely too much for just one person to handle. The school board made the decision to open up a position of assistant superintendent. Interviews were held, the top three candidates were chosen, and the interviews concluded on Friday, April 20th. The official announcement of who would hold the announcement was made on Tuesday, April 24th at the school board meeting. Chris Shanks, currently  Adrian Missouri’s High School’s Principal was hired.

Chris Shanks is originally from Platte City and attended Benedictine College on a football scholarship. “I’ve been in education for 15 years,” said Mr. Shanks, “My first ‘real job’ was coaching and teaching AP Government at Hayden High School in Topeka, Kansas. After moving back to Missouri, I taught and coached in Greenfield and El Dorado Springs. My current job, which I have held for the last six years, is the secondary principal at Adrian R-III High School,” said Mr. Shanks. Mr. Shanks holds a master’s degree in social science, a minor in education, and a master’s in education administration all from Benedictine College. He completed his education specialist degree at William Woods University.

Superintendent Dr. Matt Robinson said, “The assistant will be working on curriculum, instruction and assessment development (PK-12), data analysis, supervision of the district technology department, federal programs coordination (including applications, payment requests, end-of-year reports, and compliance to all regulations for federal programs--including Title IA, Title IIA, and employee HQT compliance). Other duties will include preparing and maintaining program evaluations and other reports to the Board of Education, effective communication with local media, and representing the district in various capacities with area universities and state organizations, including the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.”

Cameron Middle School Principal Jay Albright, who was on the interview committee, said, “The job of superintendent is just too much for one person to handle. For years, actually, the things the assistant superintendent would be doing were delegated to various administration staff. So now, instead of five or six people working together, the district will have two administrators working together and collaborating on these things,” Mr. Albright is excited to be adding Mr. Shanks to the district, “Mr. Shanks is a very knowledgeable person. I think he’s super awesome guy and he’s going to be a great addition to the district,” added Mr.Albright.

Mr. Shanks, his wife Rebecca, his son Caleb, and his daughter Karlie will be moving to Cameron this summer. Caleb will be in 8th grade and Karlie will be in 7th grade; his wife Rebecca is a registered nurse. The family hopes to be in town by July 1st. The Tank welcomes Mr. Shanks and his family and wishes him good luck this school year.
