Seniors Prepare for the Last Few Important Dates
Seniors Prepare for the Last Few Important Dates! - Katelyn Reasoner

As the year is coming to an end, students are putting together the last few pieces of the school year. MAP testing, finals, EOC’s, competitions, and of course cramming to get those low grades up before summer. The class of 2012 is buzzing with excitement, and with less than 20 days left, the countdown is on. “I’m pretty anxious to get out of here, but I’m scared about having the real world just hit me in the face when I’m done. I’m just ready to be done,” said Senior Shianne Neubauer.

However, don’t get too excited, seniors. There are still a few dates to keep in mind before you’re out of high school and out on your own.

You all know graduation is sneaking up on you, but have you heard about the other events that are being held for you and your family? Baccalaureate, class night, graduation, graduation practice, and, of course, picking up that beautiful little piece of paper that says you are free. You know what I’m talking about, right? You got it, your diploma.

Baccalaureate is a dinner sponsored by the ministerial alliance. It will be held at the First Baptist Church at 6 p.m. on May 16. The gathering has a dinner at 6 and then a public speaker at 7. The dinner is for the graduate and two guests (usually parents), but the public speaker is open for anyone to  join. Even teachers have gone in past years and have enjoyed it. “It’s totally optional, but it’s very nice to attend. I encourage all to go,” says FACS Teacher Dawn Stuedle. This will be in a church, so nice clothes should be worn. No jeans or shorts please!

Class night is the next topic of discussion. This is when seniors receive any scholarships or awards they have received. It will be at Goodrich Auditorium at 7 p.m. on May 18. Again, it’s not required, but it is respectful to attend. Everyone should dress nicely and again, no jeans or shorts.

Now for the main event I know everyone is waiting for: graduation! The graduation for the class of 2012 will be held at the Dave Goodwin Football Field on May, 20,2012 at 2 p.m. However, the weather has a major say in this. If the weather is inclement, the graduation ceremony will be held inside the gymnasium and only ten guests per graduate will be allowed in the gym. The rest of the family and friends will have to sit in the commons area and watch the ceremony via video projection. As long as there is no rain, as many people as possible are allowed outside in the stadium. The dress code is very particular though. Males are required to wear long pants (no jeans), collared shirt, and dress shoes. Females are to wear dress slacks, skirts, or dresses with a nice blouse. Dress shoes must be worn, and no flip flops! Of course, seniors must wear their cap and gown to walk at graduation.

Students will practice indoor graduation (just in case) on May 4 at 9:00 a.m., and outdoor practice will be held on May 18 at 9:00 a.m. Students will then go to the gym with their cap and gowns for group and individual pictures. Students will be allowed to pick up their diplomas on May 22 as long as all fines are paid.

Students spend all four years waiting for the moment that they are finally seniors and graduating. Make the most of the time that you have left with the people you spend almost every day with. The end of high school is closing in around you, and it’s your time to shine. Don’t forget to check in with your counselor or the senior bulletin board by the freshman hallway. Congrats class of 2012, you are almost done!
