Justin Persell participates in the caucuses - The Clinton County Leader

Each year the states must decide which  Republican Candidate to support in the primary elections. Before this happens, however, delegates must be voted for in their respective counties. Then they attend the district convention. What is decided at the district convention will be taken to state convention, and the state decides who they support for the national convention, which decides which Republican candidate will be running for president.

This year, Senior Justin Persell attended the March 17th county convention and was voted to attend the district convention along with eight others from Clinton County. Clinton County Chairperson Dan Snodgrass explained, “Justin will attend the  district congressional conventions to participate in the beginning of the voting process.”

Justin is the youngest delegate to be participating this year, and at just 18 this will be the first time he utilizes his right to vote. “Anyone who votes in Clinton County can come to the open caucus. They’ll ask for nominations for delegates; whoever is nominated will be voted on,” said Justin. “I knew I was going to be nominated, and I was expecting to be voted for, but I didn’t realize I was going to win by the margin I did,” added Justin.

Government Teacher David Mayne expressed his feelings on having a CHS senior participating this year. “This is absolutely phenomenal. The fact that we have an 18 year old Cameron High School student stepping out and participating and saying ‘I want to be a part of the American system. I want to have more than just a say in my classroom. I want to have a say in my country’, speaks so well for him and his goals and his desires,” said Mr. Mayne.

Mr. Mayne is extremely proud of Justin for voicing his opinions to the public,  “He’s entitled to his  public opinions just like the rest of us, but he’s taken his public opinion and he’s put action behind it, which is really cool. And I think it’s absolutely amazing that our county said they want to respect and honor the fact that he was going to be proud of his position and he was willing to articulate and defend his position and so now they were willing to nominate him as a delegate to the district and state levels,” added Mr. Mayne.

Dan Snodgrass was impressed with Justin as well. ”I’ve never met Justin before, but based on what I saw I think he presents himself very well and is a good choice to participate.” The conventions Justin will be attending District on April 21 in Chillicothe and State in Springfield in June.  And if you live in Clinton County, this means a CHS senior will play a big part in who your county puts forth as a the Republican Presidential Nominee for Missouri.
