Each year, the anxiety level in the senior hallway increases as graduation approaches. The stress of picking a college, filling out applications, and deciding on a major can make the last year of high school seem incredibly exasperating. Luckily for the seniors at CHS in Language Arts IV class, some recently graduated alumni have come back to give their advice on college and life after high school.

Language Arts IV Teacher Mr. Derek Williams has been inviting alumni back to speak to the seniors for seven years now. “If I tell the kids about college and how it’s going to be they seem to think I am exaggerating, but if someone who is in college tells them they will listen,” Mr. Williams said. Mr. Williams said he tries to bring back a wide variety of students to allow current students to prepare themselves for their future college. “Some of the kids who come back are kids who always had A’s in high school and some didn’t. I also try to get students who go to local colleges and some who went out of state. I just want the students to relate to the alumni that come back,” Mr. Williams added.

University of Central Missouri Sophomore Alexis Smith was one of the alumni selected to speak to the students. “I wanted to come back and speak with the students to help them avoid mistakes I made when I transitioned from high school to college,” Alexis said. One of the main topics discussed when the alumni came back was studying in college. “I never studied in high school and easily achieved A’s in all my classes, however, when I went to college I learned I did not have any study skills. I told the seniors to try and build good study habits now so they don’t have to learn in college,” Alexis said.

The alumni also discussed ways to get involved socially in college, like joining sororities and fraternities or intramural sports.

Senior Brittany Assel appreciated listening to the advice the alumni gave. “Transitioning to college seems so stressful, so it was nice to hear how students similar to me coped with the change to college,” Brittany said. She also said the advice on college professors was helpful. “They recommended getting to know your professor if it is possible and getting help from them when they have office hours,” Brittany said. Brittany also mentioned she is going to start studying more this semester to be more prepared for next year.

Altogether, the seniors at CHS are in a whirl of applications and deadlines. The advice the alumni gave the seniors will definitely help the seniors in their final semester at CHS and spread to the seniors who are not in Language Arts IV. It also provided a breath of fresh air to know that college is as fun as everyone says it is.

Good luck to all the seniors going of to college next year from The Tank!
