January is a busy month for most people. People make New Year’s Resolutions, students are going back to school after Christmas break, and the members of the Cameron High School Jazz Choir begin to prepare for Cabaret Nights. Starting on January 2, the Jazz Choir has practiced every day (except Sundays) for several hours to make sure their spectacular show is a success.

“Cabaret Nights... in one word is... exciting”, said Sophomore Jacob Fitzwater. Cabaret Nights consists of several group numbers. It also has a few solos and duets individuals in the group tried out for. Occasionally a Jazz Choir Alumni will also sing a piece during the show.

The Jazz Choir sings an assortment of songs. Freshman Meighan Robinson said, “Our director, Mr. von Glahn, chooses all the group numbers. The solos and duets are picked differently though. The individuals who wanted a solo or duet chose their own songs and tried out in front of Mr. von Glahn and the Jazz Choir group. Then he  decided which solos made it.”

Senior Zach Nuss said, “People sing all kinds of solos. Some are love ballads, others are comical. It is really cool to be part of a group that is talented enough to do several different genres.” The group numbers are all different styles as well. Zach said, “We [jazz choir members] sing Broadway style songs, ballads, and jazz songs.” No matter what style they sing, everyone in the group does their best.

Many people would assume singing in front of their peers during tryouts would be one of the hardest parts of Cabaret Nights; this is not always the case. Jacob said, “Choreography is probably the hardest part of the show for me. We have dances for almost every song, and it can be difficult to learn all the dance moves.”

Even though the dances may be difficult, the members of Jazz Choir all agree it is worth it. The money they earn goes towards their trip to New York this year.

Five years ago Cabaret Nights was started to raise money for the Jazz Choir’s trip to sing at New York’s Carnegie Hall. Since then, the Jazz Choir has continued to put on the show to show the community their awesome talent. Meighan said, “We do Cabaret Nights to put on a great show for the community. We are also doing it to raise money for out trip to New York.” This year the Jazz Choir will use the proceeds of Cabaret Nights to help fund another trip to New York. This time they will have the opportunity to sing at the Lincoln Center.

Cabaret Nights will be at Goodrich Auditorium at 7:00pm the 20-21 of this month. Tickets are on sale at the door for $10. Cabaret Nights has always been a great show with an amazing turnout each year, and the Jazz Choir looks to continue their tradition of entertaining the community.
