Change For the Better

Every year students take an End Of Course Assessment, otherwise known as the EOC. The EOC tests students on what they learned in a course that year.

The EOC’s are great for the Cameron High School.  The test help the teachers and the administrators know how well the students understand the material they were taught that year. They also show what needs to be changed and help the reputation of the school. The test are taken in the computer labs towards the end of the year and are required by state law.

In past years, scores have been down in math and social studies. Superintendent Matt Robinson said, “To help our school do better on the test, we are reviewing the math curriculum.” Math is one of the main subjects CHS students struggle in, so currently the districts plans on focusing on math the most.

There is no known way to prepare for the EOC’s besides good delivery of information from the teachers. Principal Don Gerber said, “The teachers are required to try different techniques and make sure the students have as much knowledge for these test as possible.” The students have to take these test seriously.

If a student doesn’t score well than there are consequences.

An EOC test could be up to is at least ten percent of a students grade. If a student doesn't score well, the student’s grade could fall a whole letter. If the student does well on the test, their grade could increase a letter.

This year Vice-Principal Scott Archibald was appointed curriculum advisor. Mr. Archibald said,   “This year we are spending time re-evaluating where there are gaps in teaching and searching for a more productive way. I make sure we are teaching information in middle school that will help students in high school.” The schools are getting more vertically in-line in the district so the information taught in younger grades are continuing to be taught as the students progress. This method is going to help the students remember their information better.

This year and for years to come, Cameron Schools are planning to continue working and studying hard in preparation for the EOC’s. They look forward to increased scores, but if not it’s back to the drawing board.
