In every high school there are certain people that, literally, keep the place going the way it’s supposed to. The principal and vice principal keep students in line, the nurse helps students get well, the teachers, of course, teach, and the secretary does everything in between.

Here at Cameron High School, Ms. Janel Jackson comes to the rescue whenever we need her. Whether it be answering the phones, doing attendance, putting in discipline reports, or just doing whatever Principal Don Gerber and Vice Principal Scott Archibald needs at the moment, a day in the life of Janel is never a dull moment.

The list of duties is never ending (absences, tardies, phones, purchase orders, mail, messages, etc.) , however, its not always been as “easy” as it is now. “I started working as a guidance office secretary when I was 18 years old and fresh out of high school. We had no computers; everything was done by hand,”said Janel.Janel has been lending her helping hand in many aspects of the high school; first a guidance secretary, then working in the athletic office, and now the office secretary. She coached the CHS Cheerleaders for 12 years as well.

Janel  mentioned many times how much she loves her job, and being able to see the kids of Cameron grow up and graduate. She also mentions how much time has changed things over the years, “ A lot of things have changed; more classes are available, block scheduling, different rules, college classes, dress code, attendance, and the list goes on. One of the biggest changes is Homecoming. In my opinion, no one gets excited anymore. Students would rather destroy property than have fun,” said Janel.

Between the errands, needy parents, sick students, demanding bosses, over 100 phone calls a day, and the stresses of every day life, one would think Janel would be a grumpy person. “If I ever have a question about anything, I ask Janel first. She will know what to do. She’s always smiling and in a great mood,” said Business Teacher Stephanie Williams.

Cameron High School has many employees that make the school go ‘round, but Janel has a special place in all of our hearts. She reaches out a helping hand, a pleasant smile, or even a friendly hello even when she doesn’t feel like it. She makes CHS a more pleasant place to be, and that’s all we could ask for. Take a moment out of your day to say a special thanks; make her day like she tried to make yours every day.
