Students at Cameron High School were reminded Wednesday before Thanksgiving of the people who protect this country. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the concert. The band and choir put on this concert to commemorate the veterans.

“One of the most important things about the patriotic concert is to honor our veterans and people who fought in war. The high school choir has been practicing for this since the beginning of school and all the practice has paid off. Getting ready for the patriotic concert was exciting because we knew we could take part in the 50th anniversary. I think the concert is a good idea because it gives us an opportunity to recognize the people who fight for our country,” said Sophomore Beau McDowell.

Band Director Shane Jones said, “Whenever you have a significant anniversary it marks a milestone for something that’s important in the school and in the community. When you keep celebrating these anniversaries, you’re letting people know that this is an important event and that people enjoy it. It’s something we are proud of and will continue to keep doing.”

“The patriotic concert was started to celebrate our veterans and the United States of America. One of the best ways for us to do that was to have a concert. The timing is great because it’s near Veterans Day and right before the break to get everyone thinking about what they’re thankful for. It’s a great way to celebrate veterans and America. The concert is for everybody-- it’s for people who have served and it’s aimed at thanking veterans. The concert works on a lot of different levels. There’s a lot of things that get overlooked over the course of time, but it’s kind of amazing that it has lasted all this time. Fifty years is a long time for anything to be consistent. The Student Council has done a great job of inviting veterans from the Veterans Home and setting up decorations all around the building,” said Assistant Band Director Blake Duren.

“Fifty years of a concert of this type is a major milestone. There are many people in the community that have experienced this concert or have even taken part in this concert in the past and look forward to this concert on a yearly basis”, said Choir Director Brian VonGlahn. “With it being so close to Thanksgiving, I believe the concert is a great remembrance to those who have fought and struggled to give us the freedom we have today. The concert is open to the public and students every year. It basically is to acknowledge the history of our country and those who have served and are currently serving our country here and abroad.”

Thanksgiving makes everyone appreciate what they have and the Patriotic Concert reminds people of the men and women fighting for our freedom every day. It’s a good way to honor and remember veterans everywhere.
