CHS Prepares For The ACT
Advertising
The Juniors and Seniors this year received a one of a kind experience. A representative from Missouri Western State University, Dr. Tim Wall came to host an assembly for CHS students. The students were able to partake in this first time ACT prep for free during the school day, unlike other classes taken outside of school.

Missouri Western State University Teacher, Dr. Tim Wall said, “We worked on strategies at the ACT prep to help the students perform optimally and becoming more test ready. This helps the kids understand how to navigate difficult questions, eliminate incorrect answers, solve and substitute on problems. I also help teachers integrate strategies into their classrooms, whether its language arts or history, so that their students will be prepared for tests like the ACT.”

Dr. Wall had some tips parents could help with as well. “Tips for students that are thinking about or about to take the ACT are to stay home the night before and get lots of sleep, eat proper nutrition as if preparing for a marathon, and avoid caffeine” said Dr. Tim Wall.

Students who went to the assembly, like Senior Andrea Overman, said “Dr. Tim Wall gave us a lot of good tips even though it’s a little late for us Seniors, but it’s great for the Juniors or if you haven't taken it yet. I learned to go through the reading sections and underline certain things and not to panic if there was a word that I didn’t know. Advice that helped me was to stay relaxed and take it by ear. He gave us very good tips that could be used for other subjects like science and math.”

Andrea thinks underclassmen might have benefited more than even the Seniors can. “I suggest getting Sophomores and Juniors involved next year because your Senior year is a little late for ACT prep. As a Senior, if it was not mandatory I would not go, but as an underclassman I definitely would have. Before the assembly you were just wondering what else there was to learn because I had already taken ACT prep classes and after I feel a little more prepared, the assembly was different than other ACT prep classes because Dr. Wall was a little more thorough with the generalization of what to get prepared for and had little tips and advice.”

Senior Zane Clark said, “It gave me a lot of tips and tricks that I could use to narrow down my answers so that even when I didn't know the right answer I could still make an educated guess. I also learned how the makers of the questions try to trick you and seeing this helped me understand how to avoid getting thrown off.”

As the school gears up for ACT testing, classes like this help to prepare the kids and give them good insight on how to do their best, thus better on the test.
