Homecoming week is nothing new to the residents of Cameron. For as long as anyone can remember Cameron High School students of each grade have battled each other for the first place title. For one incredibly crazy week the halls were decorated, music blared through the intercom speakers, students were dressed up in all kinds of crazy outfits, and each grade battled it out on the gym floor in the daily pep assemblies.

However, is it possible that students nowadays are just not as into the activities as they used to be? Some people may say that the students just aren’t as enthusiastic about representing Cameron and what we stand for. Some people may even say it’s not a “big deal”.

Where’s the school spirit, CHS?

In the past, students were more involved and less focused on the fact that it could get them out of class. Students are focused...just not on their school work. The dressing up and after-school activities take precedence over the fact that school still goes on and teachers still give homework. Some have made comments that Homecoming has turned into an excuse to get out of class rather than an act to support our school and alumni. “There are expectations of achievement for everyone, and as a result it is important to maintain the rigor of the classroom. The world does not stop just for a celebration. Homecoming is about the hype and competition, but people are not including the community and alumni in the package,” said Business Teacher Stephanie Williams.

Many students dressed up for the occasion. However, some just don’t see the point in it. This causes some tension between classmates which, quite frankly, would not be defined as working together. Students have a choice of whether or not they dress up. “I don’t dress up for Homecoming because I believe it is immature. Homecoming is all about fall sports and not the rest of the student body. If you aren’t an athlete, you or your opinion aren’t welcome,” said Senior Andrea Overman.

Current teachers that once attended CHS have made comments regarding previous years at the high school, and they all seem to imply the same thing--previous students had more spirit and enthusiasm. It may be the trends changing or it may be the fact that students don’t want to give up their “life” and free time. “Some things change and some things stay the same. I think that Homecoming is what people make of it. Some years the students really get into it and make it fun. They make it exciting. Other years, the students don’t seem to want to invest themselves in it and because they don’t want to put the work in, then Homecoming feels like a let down,” said Pom Squad Coach/Alumni Mandy Klenk.

Everyone has their own definition of “school spirit” and Homecoming means something different to everyone- good or bad. Homecoming is a tradition that has been going on for years and hopefully for years to come. It’s all up to the students of Cameron High School. Remember, high school is what you make of it. Whether you dress up in a silly outfit or cheer on your Dragons, support your school in whatever way you can.
