Time for a Change: Equal Voting for Homecoming Time for a Change: Equal Voting for Homecoming

It’s time again for the announcement of the CHS Homecoming Court. Every year the fall athletes pick the nominees for Homecoming Queen and the Homecoming Court. The Senior male athletes pick three female attendants as nominees for Homecoming Queen, and the Seniors female athletes pick the guys that will be representing each grade and three nominations for Homecoming King.  Underclassmen simply select one person to represent their respective grades.

Personally, I don’t have anything against the sports teams or anyone they chose to nominate. It’s great for those who play a sport or those who are nominated. I just find it to be a bit unfair that only student athletes are allowed to pick the candidates. You might be thinking, “Oh, but it’s a huge tradition at Cameron!” Isn’t everything? It doesn’t matter!

I think we are fully capable of starting a new tradition--one that allows every one who wants to nominate, the chance to. It would be as simple as adding a second round of voting. As things stand, after the Homecoming nominees are selected all the students are allowed to vote during their lunch shifts on who will become the King and Queen. So let’s take it a step further and allow the entire student body to pick the nominees. If one organization gets the opportunity to vote, then every club/organization/team should get to vote. Or better yet, the entire student body should decide who the court will be.

It seems like a very petty thing to be bothered by, but it does irritate me that student athletes appear to have the upper hand when voting for candidates. Approximately 34% of guys at the high school will have the opportunity to vote and only 19% of the girls. It’s just not logical to have a school-wide event and not have the entire school be involved. There are several non-athletic organizations within the school that do remarkable things and deserve to vote just like any student athlete would.

Yes, I know it’s just a homecoming nomination and it really doesn’t matter that much in the grand scheme of things, but I think it’s just the idea that aggravates me the most. Things regarding the homecoming nominees could be changed if the students wanted it to. My point is everyone should get the chance to voice their opinion, not just a select group of students.

Academics and athletics play an important role in education and society. Let everyone vote!

Great suggestion. I totally agree and it's kindda lame that they made you change some parts of this article. Still, great job, Comrade.
