How Far Will We Go?
Advertising
Recently in a public school in Seattle, Easter Eggs were re-dubbed “Spring Spheres” for a third grade hunt, in an attempt at political correctness. This was merely another step towards completely separating the religious aspect of Easter from the holiday. Another example of such an attempt is most commonly recognized during the Christmas season. Workers at many business are instructed to say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas” in order to avoid offending anyone. What’s next? There have already been many endeavors towards removing the phrase “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance. One of the most important principles America was founded upon was freedom of religion and for years has taken every step towards protecting that right for all people, but how far is too far?

“I don’t understand why people get so upset about saying ‘Easter’ and ‘Christmas’ instead of ‘Spring Holiday’ or ‘Holiday Season,” said Senior Sebastian Young. “Even though I don’t believe in God or Christianity or anything, I still don’t get offended by any of that. I think everybody can believe whatever they want to, I just don’t want them pushing it on anybody else-- especially me,” he said.

Sophomore Jennifer Ingraham said, “I love Jesus, and He plays a very big part of my life, especially during Easter time. It’s important for me to say Easter and Christmas because I honestly acknowledge who God is when I say it. I hate when I hear about people getting offended because they don’t want people to call Easter Easter or Christmas Christmas.”

Social Studies Teacher Mr. Kurt Dickutt thinks that political correctness has gotten out of control. He said, “People just need to relax, and stop being so sensitive. I don’t understand the people that get offended by saying Christmas instead of Winter Holiday or Easter instead of Spring Holiday. Why should it really bother them? It shouldn’t bother them in the least because if they don’t want to celebrate or acknowledge them they don’t have to. In my opinion, if you’re going to be offended by it, don’t acknowledge it. If you do get offended by it, you’re acknowledging it even more than just moving on. You can’t go off every time you get annoyed.” He continued, “To me, it just doesn’t make any sense. It’s the same thing with Christians as well, if you’re going to be offended by someone calling it a holiday rather than Christmas for instance, then call it Christmas. I just don’t understand. I think everybody is trying to be too politically correct all the time and they’re never going to accomplish anything.”

So, America, how far will we go? It appears only time will tell
