UNCOMMON SENSE: One and a Half Men?

Does the name Carlos Irwin Estevez sound familiar to anybody? Probably not, but I am pretty sure the name Charlie Sheen will ring a bell and maybe even raise a red flag in your mind. Carlos Irwin Estevez is the birth name of CBS Sitcom Two and a Half Men Star Charlie Sheen. Sheen has had a history of altercations with the law including domestic violence, alcohol abuse, and drug addiction. More recently Sheen has had the production of his his show cancelled for the rest of the season after he decided to go on a rant bashing his bosses back at CBS.

Herein lies  the first problem. I understand that Charlie Sheen is a phenomenal actor; I myself love his work as Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn in the cult-classic Major League. I also understand Sheen has been to rehab multiple times to overcome his cocaine addiction, but there comes a time when you have to say enough is enough. CBS put up with a lot more than I would have if I had been Charlie Sheen’s boss.

During production Mr. Sheen was the highest paid television actor making approximately $1.8 MILLION  PER EPISODE. Let me repeat that...$1.8 MILLION PER EPISODE! This is a weekly sitcom people?! Imagine winning the lottery once a week for as long as you chose to buy a ticket. That is basically the same deal Sheen had before he decided to throw it all away.

So he was upset by his bosses, I get it. But come on, how much of a right to not like them do you have when you’re making more in one week than a lot of people make in their lives? I am majorly involved in our high school drama program. I had the male lead in the production of Rags to Riches and I have the male lead in this weekend’s of Around the World in Eight Plays. I act because I love acting. If someone offered me even a small amount to star in a sitcom I would take it in a heartbeat without any hesitation. The last thing I would do is bad mouth the guys who gave me the opportunity.

Please don’t misunderstand me though. I’m a firm believer in our Constitution and the right to free speech. Sheen definitely has a right to voice his opinion just like every single one of us do in America, but when you talk bad about the wrong people there can be consequences. Our good friend Carlos Irwin Estevez is learning this lesson... again.
