There is but one holiday every year that chooses to celebrate “us” rather than the individual. This is the only holiday that gives people the chance to say “I love us.” That holiday is Valentine’s Day. Men and women have surprisingly different views on the holiday. And though it’s too late for this year, some CHS guys and gals have finally chosen to give the opposite sex a look inside their minds.

“I don’t think Valentine’s Day is really that important. But getting to spend time with someone you care about is wonderful,” said Freshman Leah Harp. One CHS guy was of the same opinion.

Freshman Jared Proctor said, “It is a waste of time. I do not like all the Lovey-Dovey stuff. Considering that I do not have any money, I spend none on Valentines Day. I could not tell you why Valentine’s Day is as big of a deal as it is. I think some guys really get into it because they might really care about someone, but I mean, come on! [Girls like it because] that is what they are all about.”

Jared thought he knew women, but if what Leah said is true, maybe girls do not like Valentines Day so much as just feeling the love.

Indeed, some students still believe in spreading the love. “I think Valentine’s Day is just a really romantic holiday,” said Junior Paige Jones. “I just love it. It’s the one day out of the year that guys are expected to be romantic and sweet, thoughtful, and think outside the box.”

A romantic little freshman shared his own thoughts. Freshman Garrett Hartley said, “I like Valentines Day. I think it should be spent with someone you care about. A great Valentines Day would be staying with the person you care about, talking, and making them have a fun time. It depends on the person, but I think that Valentines Day is oriented towards the girl. You should get her something that defines her as a person.”  Seems like Garrett knew exactly what Paige was looking for. Give the boy some props.

Despite having a pessimistic view of Valentines Day, Jared parted with this drop of important wisdom. Jared said, “I think chocolate is the one great gift of Valentine’s Day.” It is a very good thing Jared’s loved ones love chocolate.

If what this next student said is correct, then Jared also has the right idea.“Chocolate is always a good gift for Valentine’s Day,” said Sophomore Taylor Harcourt. Taylor seems to share a common view with most women. Desipite multiple girls interviewed with varying outlooks, all of them said chocolate was a great Valentine’s Day gift.

The ladies and gentlemen of CHS both have a variety of outlooks on the sanity of Valentines, but through all the variety, Jared summarized Valentines Day with one word. Jared said,  “Strike.” It is a true quality of man to always be thinking about ‘sports’ when he should be thinking about the ladies.  In the immortal words of Jesus of Nazareth, “Love One Another.”
