Snow Gives Students a Break

Snow Days have been abundant for the Cameron School District in early 2011. January 10, 11, and 12 were all snowed out by the 3-6 inches of white fluffy stuff that driving adults hate and young elementary school students love. Cameron Students made up lost days on Martin Luther King Day (January 17), and will currently make up two more on President’s Day (February 21), and the first day of spring break (April 21).

Several Students did not seem too disappointed for the arrival of snow. Sophomore Paige Gentry said, “I appreciated the snow. I spent most of my time sleeping.” Sleep is a rare and valuable commodity for the average teenager.

Sleep wasn’t the only snow break activity. Freshman Alyssa Mercer said, “I spent my break hanging out with friends. It was a little hard getting from place to place because my mom’s car is not very well equipped for winter weather.” When Alyssa was asked if she could have made it to school on the icy roads, she had an interesting response. Alyssa said, “I plead the fifth. I enjoy the winter weather because we don’t have to have to go to school, but when we have to go the weather is just a pain in the neck.”

Alyssa seems to be correct about the so called ‘pain in the neck’ the weather provides. Junior Kiara Pratt, “I was going to go sledding with my friends, but it was really, really, really, really cold. I pretty much just stayed at home and read. I also did some writing projects as well.” That is a lot of really(s), but she is right about the cold. Wednesday morning, the Cameron Hospital Thermometer read -2 degrees at 6:30 a.m.

Even teachers have a positive outlook on their days away from the lovely smiling faces of the high school children. CHS Language Teacher Melisa Harper-Stemberger said, “I spent my time off working hard. I will be honest, I slept in two of the days for about an hour. That was wonderful. I spent the rest of the time inside by the warm fire. I am very fortunate that my husband is also a teacher. We actually got to see each other, which is nice. We cleaned the house and I caught up on some grading.”

Both student and teacher were glad to get to come back after the three day break. Kiara said, “After the third day I was a little bit stir-crazy.”

Strangely enough, Mrs. Harper used nearly the same phrasing as Kiara, saying, “I was really happy to be back at work because I get stir-crazy.” Perhaps the weather makes us all a little stir crazy.

The snow day break was a good one for most, but it is all behind us now. Cameron classes have resumed. It would seem we have at least one thing to be thankful for in this harsh winter wonderland--a warm school full of warm friendships.
