Homecoming Week in Cameron was held October 4-9. This year there were many activities to participate in, such as float construction, window painting, and dress-up days. Some students, however, instead found another means of “showing school spirit.” Some students went around egging and chalking cars. This is vandalism, which, some students learned is very serious stuff.

Homecoming had always been a way to welcome home the alumni  with a week long school-spirit-filled week that is supposed to bring the school together. This year though it seemed like the only thing people were concerned with was playing jokes on other people or other peoples their cars. According to Mr. Williams, Sophomore class sponsor, there were only 60 people at float building at any given time during the week. For a school of five hundred this seems very small.

“I do not believe this contributes to the spirit of spirit week. When I was a kid we didn’t do these things.” Officer Proctor said.

Egging has been going on for a long time. Some people want to press charges, because it is a form of vandalism but Junior Adam McMain says, “I think it’s a tradition. I don’t believe we should be punished as long as we’re not doing it to random people.”

This year there was an “epic egg fight” hosted at a high schooler’s house where there was a battle of mainly juniors and seniors where, for a while, they did nothing but pelt each other with eggs. Normally this would have been fine but a senior, Jesse Wilson, was struck in the eye with a frozen egg. “This kind of controlled environment is okay, because there’s not kids driving around town in cars and doing it, but it wasn’t good that [Jesse] got hurt, the frozen eggs were a bit much,” Officer Proctor explained.

It has been almost three weeks since homecoming and their are still cars with chalk all over them, whether it be “Seniors 2011” or random scribbles, about 40% of the cars in the high school parking lot were hit. “It’s high school homecoming, it’s gonna happen, get over it,” is the advice Sophomore Whitney Walser gives to people about the things that happened.

Is it just harmless pranks or fun? Some people do not believe that this “past-time” contributes to the spirit of spirit week, but others look forward to homecoming just for the pranks, so you decide. Is it school spirit or some very bored high schoolers with nothing better to do?
