It’s that time of year again. Everywhere you look you see bright yellow buses, Friday night football games, dances and homework; school is in session. From the little preschoolers, to the high school seniors, excitement is in the air, but for one upcoming group of students this feeling is huge. Coming from the middle school to the high school is a big transition, but the freshmen all to seem to feel, as freshman Rebekah Dunagan says,” More adult-ish.”

As a freshmen, there are now many challenges you must face like the block schedule. Perhaps more difficult to explain are the many different things which may seem alien to these kids, like the flow of things, the hectic hallways, and the lunch. Most freshmen say their favorite thing so far is the food.

Along with classes and lunch, another thing some freshman are getting into are sports and clubs, whether it be football or track, basketball or volleyball, FFA, or Foreign Language Club (FLC), almost everyone is doing something. In high school there are so many organizations and extra-curricular activities to participate in.

One thing in high school that everyone likes is the block schedule. Block scheduling is where you have all eight classes but only four per day. Since there are only four classes the classes are much longer--instead of 45 minutes they are an hour and a half long which is double the time normal classes are! Instead of only getting three minutes between classes, you now get five, which doesn’t seem like long but, most can get there. The lockers and separate hallways are a plus too. The only problem, as freshman Garret Ourth pointed out is,” I have to go all the way down the freshman hallway just to get my bag.”

With growing up comes more freedom, but also more rules. In the high school a few rules, like the dress code, are strongly enforced. Another rule a lot of freshmen and other students get into trouble with is the tardy rule. You are only allowed 7 tardies before an hour detention.

Good luck to all of the newcomers, otherwise known as freshmen, because even though you’re bottom of the totem pole now, in a few more years you will be on top of the world again.
