Purses or Backpacks? Which do you prefer and which should teachers allow? - Sean Brier
Advertising
This year as students find themselves returning to class they also find themselves rushing through the hallways trying to find a way to balance all their schoolwork. In some cases the backpack has become a student’s life saver to avoid venturing down the hectic freshman hallway. Unfortunately, some teachers are allowing girls to bring in purses but are not allowing other students to bring in backpacks. Some students are asking the question, “Is that really fair?”.
“I think its just as bad as bringing a backpack in; some purses are bigger than backpacks,” said Sophomore Karley Patti. She thinks it  is pointless for girls to bring in purses into the classroom. Karley also explained anything a girl would normally carry in a purse (cell phones, money, make-up, ect.) could just as easily be put in a backpack and feels girls only carry them for fashion purposes.

On the other end of the spectrum, Sophomore Jesse Butler expresses his concerns on the subject.
“I understand that girls have to carry things with them but what a guy cant fit in his pocket shouldn’t be with him anyways.”

Jesse goes on to explain that with most teachers do allow you to bring in your backpack, but most science classes will not allow you to bring in backpacks for safety reasons, which can become a hassle.

“I think deciding on bringing in bags is an individual teachers decision and I would respect what any teacher would want to do, but the purses have gotten so big now it’s become difficult to make a decision.” Said High School FACS teacher Mrs. Dawn Stuedle.

Both purses and backpacks are allowed in Mrs. Stuedle’s class room .The FACS room requires students that bring in purses or backpacks must keep them on the floor out of the way due to many students caught texting during class.

Security is also another thing the teachers are becoming more cautious about. In the past, money has been stolen from Mrs. Stuedle’s own billfold . Mrs. Stuedle has also made it point to keep all classroom doors locked when she isn’t present for the safety of her students belongings as well as her own. “I trust my students, but I don’t want to give them an opportunity for me not to trust them.”

For now students will follow the current policy on bags, but the school can always agree on this. Whether for security, safety or preventing students from texting, there will always be reasoning and debate on bags in the classroom at CHS.
