It’s a new school year, which means new Tank staff members as well! This year, the newspaper staff is full of many talented writers with a passion for journalism. The Tank is proud to welcome eleven new members into the group: Alexis Smith, Angelica Scott-Stone, Daniel Sloan, Dillan Klindt, Eric Wallace, Hannah Goebel, Hunter Yeager-Johnson, Molly Long, Nathan Rose-Heim, Samantha McClary, and Sydnie Holzfaster.

“I’ve aways had an interest in journalism,” said Sophomore Samantha McClary. “I thought it would be a good class to take and I thought it would help me because I feel like I do have good stories, but I need help tweaking them.”

Junior Hannah Goebel said, “A lot of my friends were in it last year and they said it was a lot of fun. Plus it’s for dual credit, so I’ll get credit in college.”

Not all of them had journalism in mind at first when picking out their schedules. Junior Nathan Rose-Heim wasn’t even really considering taking Newspaper class until the idea was mentioned to him.

“It’s actually kind of a funny story,” Nate said. “I had an empty block somehow in my schedule. [Tank Advisor] Mr. Williams said, ‘I can’t help but notice, but that block is open and that happens to be Newspaper.’ And I said, ‘Hmm. That’s interesting.’ I always liked writing and I thought it would be fun, so I put it in my schedule.” Although unplanned, newspaper class was something Nathan began to look froward to. “I’m so excited. I’ve already been thrilled with interviews. Some of the people I’m working with are fantastically creative and it’s just a wonderful thing to do. It’s a wonderful place to work and it’s a great experience.”

Samantha’s outlook is the same as Nathan’s. “I actually love this. This is my new favorite class. I am really excited about it,” she said. “[I hope to] get a good story that will get published...I like making people feel proud of me, and if I get a good story, then hopefully I would be able to do that.”

The staff isn’t the only aspect new this year to The Tank. The class is planning on using more tools and resources now available to them that will allow for further progression of the newspaper. Video interviews and voice-overs are a couple of the new ideas they are toying with.

Junior Sean Brier said, “One thing new that’s coming to The Tank is this cool thing we are doing to move forward with the rest of technology. We are doing video interviews in which we interview a whole bunch of people about a certain topic or subject and then we put the interviews together and then that’s our video. That shows more about the topic. We put it online on our Tank site, tank.cameronschools.org.”

Although Sean will not be “writing” any more stories this year, the returning member is thrilled about becoming one of The Tank’s video reporters. “I did really like writing. I think it’s pretty cool what you can do with words and how you can tell a story and tell what’s happening, but I do like video editing too. I’m more of a technology-type of person, so I like putting things together and making them look good and just being able to show everybody else what I did. I think this is a really great idea--you’re not just reading words on a page but you actually get to see people talking. You get to see their expressions and how they really feel about the certain topic.”

So as you can see, there are many new faces and exciting features that have been added to The Tank for the 2010-2011 year. Make sure to look out for them in future articles and don’t forget to check out The Tank website for much more!
