Building houses, a great reputation, and friendship at Cameron High School for 31 years is sadly coming to an end for the Carpentry Instructor Mr. Don Vaughn. So many well constructed houses, built by Mr. Vaughn and students hands, will be all that remains of such a successful teacher.

In 31 years of teachingMr. Vaughn has taught biology, physical science, ecology, physical education, industrial arts, and, of course, carpentry. As a carpentry teacher he has built 13 houses with past students and is currently in the process of completing the 14th home at Eagles Landing.

The houses, whicare sub-contracted out to contractors around Cameron and surrounding areas to do concrete work, electrical, and just things that there isn't enough time for, are mainly the result of student effort and Mr. Vaughn's leadership. The total average cost of a house is around $180,000depending on the lot. Materials alone cost about $120,000. The school district pays for the house to be built, which comes out of a separate account. Houses in the past have been sold from $118,000 all the way up to $212,000. Anyone can buy a carpentry house.

"If we finish the house within the one school year that we are given we will be able to go on field trips to go fishing," explained Senior Darrin Adams. "If we finish late then Mr. Vaughn has to come in after school is out to finish the house, but we wont let that happen; we do not want to keep that burden on Mr. Vaughn's shoulders since he is retiring."

"Some students are disappointed that I am retiring after this year; they planned on taking the class next year," said Mr. Vaughn.

For Senior Ryan Orr, he was surprised at the announcement. "I thought Mr. Vaughn had at least one more year left in him, but I'm glad he is doing what he wants to do."

"My plans after I retire are to work on my house, go hiking, and take trips that I have not been able to take because of work," explained Mr. Vaughn.

Now that Mr. Vaughn is retiring, there will not be a carpentry class at the High School. Students will have to go to Grand River Technical College in Chillicothe Mo. for Vo-Tech to take the course.

As students say farewell, they are heard loud and clear. "Thanks for teaching me everything I know about building houses, have a great retirement and we will miss you!" said Ryan Orr.
