Well another year comes to a close and the thoughts of the kids reflect the coming summer, along with their attention spans. Many see the coming months as a relaxing break where they can sleep in everday, while others see a time for swimming and fun activities. Still others see a chance to put a little green in their pockets. Yes, the summer job comes into mind for some students at CHS.

"This summer I'm working at N.W.," said Senior Darren Adams. "It's gonna be great. I get to work in the brush crew, which goes out and clears brush to power lines and junctions, and trust me, I'm going to be making some money and most of it is going to go to gas." Darren worked for T and S Tires over the last year where he changed tires and swapped out break pads.

The benefits to a summer job are numerous. It's money in your pocket, gives you something to do, and it helps you learn life-long lessons. And if you get right down to it, jobs save kids money because they had to earn it and they know what it took to make they money. That knowledge weighs on kids and helps guide them in their buying decisions.

"I certainly know where my money comes from and where it goes," said Matt McCannon. "I recently quit my job, and I don't plan on getting a job this summer. I guess we will see where it goes. I'm going to be a lot smarter with my money just because I know it's no in short supply."

Most people think that fast food joints are the only place for a young person to work. Those places hold many great jobs, but fast food is just the tip of the iceberg.

"Being a referee or an umpire is a great summer job for teenagers," said YMCA employee and Athletics Director Adam Bliley. "It is great because it's something new everyday and it's actually exciting. The people and the environment also help make it fun. The worst thing you go through is missing a call and most of the time the people completely understand." And just for a side note, the YMCA is currently looking for umpires and referees for the up-coming seasons.

According to libraryindex.com, 50.2% of kids aged 16 to 19 are employed or are actively searching for a job during the month of June. Luckily for them, there is no school to have to work around. At least the kids with jobs are learning lessons they can keep for the rest of their lives. Lets just hope they get to spend a little on something fun.
