At-a-glance

If you took a poll at CHS you would find at least one fan for every MLB team. -

The crack of the bat, the aroma of freshly cut grass, and fans in their team's colors adorning the bleachers bring back fond memories for many people of a time when they were only knee high. We remember a time when people would wake up early in the morning to go with their family to spend the day at the local ballpark and take part in America's Pastime. For many, baseball is a game they have grown up playing and watching. They have idolized the many gifted athletes that have stepped foot on the hallowed grass and dirt of major league ballparks. Still today, even in the current economy, major league ball parks are thriving, and the MLB recently opened their 2010-11 season. At CHS everyone is a Dragon fan, but when you start talking professional sports, you will soon realize how different students' preferences are.

Junior Kirk Magnuson is a supporter of his own hometown team. Kirk said, "I'm a Kansas City Royals fan through and through. I have followed them as long as I can remember, and my favorite player is David DeJesus." Kirk hopes they have a winning season, but doesn't think they will win the World Series. He said, "They're my team, but they aren't very good right now." There is a lot of loyalty to the Royals in CHS; they have the most followers of any other team.

Sophomore Jared Thompson supports the crew in blue alongside Kirk. He said, "I've grown up here and I stay loyal to my team. Ironically though my favorite player is Albert Pujols with the Cardinals because he's the best player in the league. I know it might seem kind of "fair weather," but when the Cardinals take on my Royals, I'm always wearing my powder blue."

Jared might like a player from across the state, but freshman Ryan Burkhart roots for a team nowhere near Missouri. Ryan said, "I get a messed with a lot for it, but I'm a New York Yankee's fan. I've always liked them and I don't really plan on changing." Ryan enjoys the joking and feels it all adds to the fun of supporting a baseball team. Unlike Kirk, Ryan thinks his team will win the World Series. He explained, "We have one of the best teams in baseball. The Yankees have a lot of individual stars, but they're all in sync with each other and are ready to win the championship." Ryan has high hopes for his Yankees this season.

Every baseball fan longs to see their favorite team reach the pinnacle of the baseball world and win the World Series. True fans will stick with their team through thick and thin if they're number one, or dead last. It's a long season and anything can happen. Who knows? Everyone loves an underdog! Maybe this baseball season will bring with it a few surprise turnouts and maybe your favorite team will win it all when the time comes at the end of October.
