Alanna Allen tries to figure out what classes she should take next year. -

As we say goodbye to our seniors, we say hello to our upcoming seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen. The students are already planning for next year and getting their class registration out of the way. As our upcoming seniors are thinking, "Wow, this is my last year", we have the upcoming freshmen thinking "Wow, I'm heading to the high school."

One of our counselors, Ms. Grossman, gives excellent advice to help the seniors out. "The senior year is not the year to take it easy. Parents, don't let your kids convince you this is okay!  'Four in the Core' is our biggest suggestion. How can you expect to do well in your Math, English, Science and Social Studies classes in college if you take an entire year off from thinking about it?  Would you plan on playing football in college, but skip your senior season?  Doubtful.  You want college to be easier, and for that to happen you need to keep your mind mentally in-shape for those subjects!"
For registration to get done, the school has to start early. Ms. Grossman explained, "I get all of the materials ready in January and February. In early March, the counselors begin classroom presentations with all students (except seniors) and begin visiting the 8th graders with scheduling information.  By April, the students submit their course requests so the administration can make decisions about how many sections need to be offered of each subject.  The master schedule is developed and entered into Powerschool, and students are assigned into that schedule by the Powerschool system.  It is amazing that 500 students can be shuffled into classes with the click of a mouse in 10 minutes."

Even though our teachers, administrators, and counselors start early its still not the fast easy process. It takes forever. It's a year-long process because teachers, administrators, and counselors are always looking at ways to improve the schedule and courses that are offered. We officially begin in October, asking teachers to submit any changes to their course descriptions and what they plan to offer to students for the next school year. When that information is compiled, the course description book is revised and updated for students and parents."

After the teachers, administrators, and counselors have done all they could do, they wait.

"The process with students runs from March until August. When the counselors leave for the summer in mid-June, we try to have students' schedules run in the computer, but they are not in final form.  We cannot fix conflicts until August when we know all of the final staff changes that have been made by the administration over the summer.  We have about 85-90% completely finalized for registration in August.  The remainder of those, we have to wait to meet with the students and find out how they want to fix their scheduling conflicts.  And then there are class changes the first four days of schools.  Therefore, we don't have all schedules finalized until after the first four days of school," explained Ms. Grossman.

Students are thinking schedules as well. Upcoming Senior Brooke Bradshaw explains, "I can't wait for my senior year, even though I am only taking one college class. I'm not really worried about much. The only thing I'm worried about is getting in to college"

As we know our upcoming seniors are very worried and stressed out about next year, but what about the up coming juniors?

Upcoming Junior Alanna Allen explains what she looks forward to about next year. "I am ready for the college classes and the more choices we all have as juniors--not as much limitations. The only thing I am worried about is the college classes being too hard and not having time for all the homework during sports."

As we finish up the rest of the 2009-2010 year, we start the 2010-2011 year. As everybody knows registration is stressful and a bit confusing, but everything always works out. So plan ahead, get it done, and enjoy next year...whether as a freshman or a senior!
