Most students will agree math isn't the most exciting subject, but a great teacher can make the learning process so much more painless, which is why students are dreading having to say farewell to two of Cameron High School's teachers.

College Algebra, Prob and Stats, Trigonometry, and Calculus Teacher Jeff Meyer recently bought a house in Liberty and will be teaching upper-level mathematics courses at Excelsior Springs High School next year, as well as coaching football as the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator. He said the drive to Excelsior Springs will be much shorter than the drive to Cameron. "It was a very difficult decision to leave," he said, "but I'm excited for the opportunity and challenge of teaching and coaching at a new school."

With Mr. Meyer gone, Junior Lena Blackburn is looking at next year with a bit of uncertainty. "I'm nervous that we're going to get an inexperienced teacher and I won't get the same help that Coach Meyer gives and I'll just struggle a lot." She plans on taking Calculus next year but, considering the circumstances, isn't sure now.

Not to worry, Lena. Mr. Meyer has advice to give students for next year. "My advice to the students that will be 'dominating' the math classes is to start the school year with an open mind and be sure to give the new teacher a fair chance," he said. "I hope that all of the juniors taking any of my classes this year will be enrolled in Calculus and/or any remaining dual credit math courses they have not taken."

Just like Mr. Meyer, Algebra II and Math Applications Teacher Matt Jacobs will also be leaving. He is moving to Iowa because his wife received a new job with the IRS in Des Moines, but he still plans on teaching after he moves.

Sophomore Clint Caselman said, "I like having Coach Jacobs as a teacher because he makes the class fun. It's a very relaxed atmosphere to learn in, and though his assignments get kind of hard, he's trying to make us learn, so I like it."

The students are grateful for having them and will miss them after they leave. Lena and Clint look back at the memories they remember most.

One word stands out the best in Lena's mind when it comes to remembering Mr. Meyer. "Domination!" Lena also said she will miss Mr. Meyer's inspiration the most. "He always inspired me to do my best. He's a very good teacher, very helpful, and pushed me to go forward."

"The most memorable thing about Coach Jacobs is he jokes around with all his students and he tries to make it fun," said Clint.

Both Mr. Meyer and Mr. Jacobs will miss the students just as much.

"I am going to really miss the great students of CHS as they have definitely been my favorite thing about teaching and coaching here," said Mr. Meyer. "I have been extremely fortunate to work with some amazing students and athletes during my time here and I will always have fond memories of the numerous successes that these students achieved inside and outside the classroom."

Mr. Jacobs had a similar view. "[I will miss] their energy and outgoing personalities," he said. "My favorite thing about teaching here is interacting with students and helping them with their problems." His advice to students is to "continue to work hard for your goals."

CHS is very lucky to have had these two teachers. Students who have had them will say they are very relaxed and make math more interesting than it really is. They are both very dedicated and never hesitate to help a student out. They have left their marks and will definitely be missed and remembered!
