Cuts are happening all around the world and schools are right in the middle of it all. The state of Utah is wanting to cut Senior year completely according to CNN. Eliminating the twelfth grade could save the state up to $60 million a year.

Though it might seem like a good idea for Utah, Cameron doesn't seem to keen on it. "Cutting out Senior year, students will be missing out on more of the education and general education classes that students probably need to have to go into college," said Cameron High school French Teacher Mrs. Mimi Jones.

According to Counselor Mr. Edd Green, about 124 graduating Seniors are enrolled at Cameron High School this year. On average, just one Senior will spend about $2000 during their Senior year. If each of the 124 Seniors spend $2000 that would add up to $248,000. Most of the money is spent on college classes that are around $195 for 3 credit hours and up, graduation cap and gown, lunch money, school supplies, diplomas, and any extra the student might need.

"Budgets have already been frozen at the high school, and different cutbacks have been made," said Cameron High School Family Consumer Science Teacher Mrs. Dawn Stuedle. "These cuts that are happening all around us and affecting the schools decrease the opportunities and resources for current and future students," Mrs. Stuedle added.

Cutting Senior year gives students a head start on college, but those students may not be ready for college. "Senior year is the time to get yourself and everything ready for college and the long road ahead," said Cameron High School Senior Chandelle Atkinson.

With age you gain wisdom and make bigger decisions. "We force our kids to grow up too fast and shove them out in the world," said Mrs. Stuedle. Kids are not legal adults until the age of 18. This means if those students go to college earlier in life they wont be able to sign a lease on an apartment for school, have certain documents signed by themselves, or to get a loan for school or a car.

According to www.collegeboard.com, Senior year is a particular interest to colleges. Senior year is the main year that students use to take dual credit classes. Eliminating Senior year could cause a shortage in credits for students. "We need higher standards at our High School, it is like illegal immigration, just because they are already here does not mean its OK to stay," Mrs. Jones added.
