The College History class dressed up and danced how they did in the 1920's era as a part of their speakeasy. - Michael Cox

Imagine living in the 1920's and going back and experiencing everything happening in that era. If you're in College History you can. Mrs. Becky Harrold made a project for the College History class to do, in which they put together a Speakeasy. Speakeasies were essentially underground saloons where alcohol was sold and consumed illegally during the period of Prohibition. And though there was no actual alcohol consumed, all the students in College History classes had different responsibilities that were essential for the Speakeasy to be a success in their class.

This is the 3rd year Mrs. Harrold has had the College History students make a Speakeasy. She explained, "I wanted the students to re-create the attitude and the culture of the 1920's. The culture of the 1920's was youth culture and it was the first time America had an identity and because I deal with youth, it was a perfect fit to have them do this. In the speakeasy, we re-create the costumes and the dancing; they are supposed to use the slang and just the attitude they had then. Back in World War I, it was kind of a 'live life to the fullest' attitude. The women were a big part of it because they were very independent. They were known as the 'flappers'."

This project not only helps students learn more about the 1920's era, but it is also really fun for them. Mrs. Harrold said, "The students definitely had a good time doing this. Some students really got into it that never get into in anything else and they really have a lot of fun."

Senior Bobby Herchenroder was a student involved in the speakeasy. He explained, "We danced the way they did and listened to music from back then and we ate food and drank stuff. But I actually really enjoyed it. It was a lot better than sitting in class and doing school work. Plus I won a dance contest so that made it even better."

There were a lot of fun things they did with the Speakeasy, but Senior Amanda Diven's favorite part was the dancing. "The whole thing was a lot of fun, but the dancing was probably my favorite part. We did a lot of partner dancing and it was really fun. It helped us with learning it better too. Like while we were doing it, a lot of people were like 'Did they really do this?'. It was just a really good experience."

The 1920's was a very dynamic time in America and the College History students realized that because of this project. It was very beneficial for the students to experience how things were then. They saw exactly how it was and they did it in a way that was really fun for them. It got everyone involved and like it was said before..."it was a lot better than sitting in class and doing school work."
