Eighth grade teachers put together a skate night on Thursday February 18 for the whole Middle School to help pay for future educational and recreational trips for the eighth grade students. The skate night had a theme of the Olympics. Teams of teachers volunteer to put on the skate night. Students could come dressed up as their favorite Olympian and enter a costume contest of best dress if they pleased and become involved with games to make new friends.

Every third Thursday of the month, except the first and last month of the year, students pay $4 to get into the skating rink at Big Time Skate Center in Cameron, MO. The $4 covers the students entering the rink and the use of roller blades or regular skates. Concessions are separate from the proceeds. Half of the money the students pay to skate goes to the grade that sponsors the skate night to pay for that grade's trips; in this case the eighth grade sponsored the skate night this time.
Each month different grades and school groups sponsor different skating events at Big Time from 6-8pm. "On January 28 CMS Student Council (STUCO)sponsored the skate night with a theme of 'Come and Have Fun,'" said CMS STUCO Sponsor Mrs. Gracie Wallace. The $222 STUCO received went into the Student Council account and that money will be used to pay for refreshments at the 8th grade recognition night later this year in May. 111 students attended the skate night in January, which was a record. No down payment had to be made and the students did not have to meet any requirements in order to be eligible to go to the skate night. "The students are not required to participate in the skate night, it is just an activity to help out," said Eighth Grade Social Studies Teacher Mr. James Smith.

Students were able to participate in open skating, the dice game, limbo, and to get their pictures taken with winter gear. Teachers gave away gold, silver, and bronze Olympic medals to students who stood out in the school the most. "The medals that the students received where CD's that had some music on them that the teacher's put together with a ribbon through them," said Eighth Grade Teacher Mrs. Christine Webber. Those students also received a candy bar for their outstanding achievements in the class room. All of the students helped to bring in money to better educate themselves and future students. Approximately 78-80 students skated in February, which gathered in around $300 but half of that went the eighth grade class.
