Camp Quality helps kids with cancer be kids again. -

Cancer is a something that instantaneously changes lives. When a child or teen has cancer it is hard for them to concentrate on just being a kid. They have to worry about when they have their next treatment or how they can't do a certain activity because of the cancer. Camp Quality (CQ) helps those kids be kids again.

"Camp Quality is a week long camp for kids with cancer. Campers are children 4-17 years old who have been treated or diagnosed with cancer," said Director of Camp Quality Northwest Missouri Lynett Bingaman. She said they also have year-round support for the families of those children and they do year-round activities for them. CQ isn't only for campers; it is also for volunteers. Without volunteers the camp wouldn't run as smoothly as it does now. People can volunteer to be a companion, staff member, or day volunteer. The children are matched up with a companion. During that entire week the companion does everything with the child he or she has been matched up with. Staff members are in charge of many things including planning activities, working in the kitchen, and being dorm parents. Day volunteers are people who want to help out for a day.
There are requirements to being a volunteer at CQ.  "The volunteers have to be 18 years old. Sometimes 16 and 17 year olds are allowed to participate so we have some experienced volunteers for next year. Volunteers also have to be a resident of the United States. They are required to go through a police background check, interviews, and training the first year they participate. If they have volunteered before they don't have to go through the training," said Lynett.

Last year Senior Alex Spencer was a lifeguard for CQ. "I heard they needed some [lifeguards] and I had the time so I decided I should help. I got hooked on helping after that. The most memorable thing about camp is when the children first start walking off the bus. I realized how many people are affected by cancer and how much we are helping the children get their lives back," said Alex. He is volunteering this year as a companion.

CQ is also getting some new volunteers from Cameron this year. Senior Jake Lintner is volunteering as a companaion for camp this year. "I thought about it [volunteering], but I wasn't set on doing it until [CHS Alum] Aaron Early talked me into it," said Jake. Even though Jake and Alex are volunteering, CQ still needs more volunteers.

CQ is doing the best they can to help children with cancer get their lives back. They are doing a great job, but they are in need of volunteers. If you would like to volunteer for camp, you can call the Camp Quality office at 816-232-2267 or e-mail them at campqualityoffice@yahoo.com. You can also get an application from the Camp Quality Area Representative Mr. Derek Williams.
