While students are in high school they're allowed to participate in extra-curricular activities such as sports or clubs such as Christian Students United (CSU) or Drama Honor Society (DHS).  Some students can also be involved in other activities not school related as well, such as Community Action Partnership, a program to help kids with getting good grades or finding a job, or Ballroom Dancing. Ballroom Dancing is a formal, social dance where a boy and girl work together to perform a unique dance, and two CHS students are about to show their skills.

Sophomore Matt Duncan and Senior Lindsey Mattox are ready to cut a rug and show their stuff in a regional competition. The two will head to the regional competition at the end of March, and if they do well at the first competition, and they intend to, they'll go to National Competition sometime in July, which will be held on a cruise ship. The Regional competition is going to be in Des Moines, IA, and the dance team will be transported there by Meri's Dance Studio so they can audition. The competition will bring lots of different dancers with lots of different styles, not just Ballroom Dancing. Competition usually also comes with lots of practice and preparation as well, and so far according to Matt they've done a lot of practicing. "Practices have been going really well, but we've still got a lot to improve on before we compete," says Matt.

The studio has more female dancers than male so the partners often switch, but most of the time Senior Lindsey Mattox, and Matt Duncan are partnered together. Lindsey joined Ballroom Dancing after watching a performance, and wanting to try. Lindsey went a little more in depth about how the competition works. She mentioned those who place first or second go to Nationals. Those who place third can re-try and send in a video of their performance. If the video is better, those pairs get to go to Nationals. With the generous offer the competition has offered, Lindsey still had feelings of uncertainty.  "I'm nervous because Matt has to throw me in the air, and we still need to practice a lot," says Lindsey. "If we keep practicing, and get some of the lifts down, I'm sure we will place in the competition though," says Lindsey.

With Lindsey feeling unsure of how the practices were going right now, she reassured with time comes practice, and they still have some time before competition so the dance will most likely be mastered. CHS wishes a good luck to Matt, Lindsey, and all the other dancers going to competition!
