Mr. Roper's seventh grade class preparing to go on their trip. -

Going on a field trip is like a vacation day from school. That's why the seventh graders were excited about visiting the World War I museum at Liberty Memorial in Kansas City on February 25. Not only do they get a day out of school, but they got to learn about an important time in history. This museum is the only museum in the United States fully dedicated to the history of WWI.

Seventh Grade Geography Teacher Mr. Mike Roper decided he wanted to take the seventh grade class to the WWI Museum to educate them more about the history of the war. Mr.Roper said, "We did it the last two years for the seventh grade and this year for the Napoleonic Lead, which is a military history club. I decided we should take the whole seventh grade there again. I gave them a little background knowledge so they didn't go in there with no knowledge of the war."

Mr. Roper thinks it is an excellent museum and recommends people visit it. According to him, they have a lot of military hardware at the museum. Mr. Roper said, "There's a lot of relics from the war. About three-fourths of the museum covers the European forces and the last quarter covered the American part of the war. It also has tanks, artillery, uniforms, and planes on display." The museum also has audiovisual exhibits that tell the stories of the war.

Unlike the seventh grade teachers who have taken this trip in years past, this was the first time going to the museum for a lot of the students. Seventh Grader Dakota Spencer said, "I haven't been to this museum before, but I was looking forward to learning new facts about the war and I was glad to get out of school!"

Hunter Harrell is another seventh grader who has never been to the museum before. But just as Dakota said, he was also glad to get out of school and was looking forward to the field trip. Hunter said, "We have been learning about Europe, Asia, and Africa this year. We took a little break from that and Mr. Roper gave us some general information about WWI so we would know a little about the war."

Having this trip helped inform the seventh graders about the war and taught them new educational information. They all seemed to enjoy it and had a great learning experience. Many of them hope to make another trip to the museum to see artifacts that weren't displayed at this time, since the museum only displays a quarter of their collection of WWI memorabilia at a time.
