Valentine's Day. They're two simple words that couples love and singles dread. Valentine's Day is a symbol of love, affection and caring for other people who play a special role in your life. When most people think of Valentine's Day, they think roses, chocolate, balloons and stuffed animals. When the high school Christian Students United (CSU) remembers February 14th, they think of the elderly.

On Friday, February 12th, almost 20 CSU members traveled to Cameron Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and The Village Nursing Home with baskets overflowing with homemade cookies. They handed out the cookies to every resident who was around. CSU President Senior Meghan Mulcahy explained what the purpose of the activity was. She said, "Quite a few elderly people don't have any close family around them. On Valentine's Day especially they can feel lonely and as if no one cares. We [CSU] felt like it was our responsibility as Christians and as people to spread a little love and remind them people do still care about them."

Meghan felt this year was a roaring success and would like to make this an annual activity.

In the past CSU hasn't done very much outside of a few parties here and there. This year they decided to take a new angle and be more service-oriented. They have decided to hold bi-monthly activities where they go out into the community, then go to one member's house and hang out with friends. Senior Scott Walser has been in CSU since it started three years ago during his sophomore year. He feels like CSU has done a better job of being a Christian organization by leading and showing their faith through example. He said, "It is a great feeling knowing I am really doing something to help my community. I have a blast every time we go and I would even come back as an alumni." Scott hopes to see CSU continue to grow as the years go by.

CSU Treasurer Senior Nick Steele, who has also been a member of CSU since it started, is excited at the thought of seeing the organization grow. He said, "Even though I'm graduating this year, I'm excited to see such a turnout. It gives me hope for the future or CSU." Nick wants as many people as possible to be able to have as many memories and good times as he has. This years Valentine's day was no exception.

It is inevitable as you grow older you will lose people who mean the most to you. For many senior citizens living in the local nursing homes, it isn't very often they are told someone is thinking about them. When they are it means the world to them. So next time you celebrate Valentine's Day or even think of someone close to you, take CSU's lead and take a moment to remember people who don't have anyone close to them and don't be afraid to show someone you have never met you care about them.
