Three members of FCCLA (Future Career and Community Leaders of America) are going to State this month for an FCCLA competition called The STAR (Students Taking Action for Recognition) Events. They are Juniors Brooke Bradshaw and Lindsay Thompson, and Sophomore Kirby Stuedle. To qualify, the students threw a party for Mrs. Steele's Life Skills class. The Life Skills class is a special education class at CHS for mentally handicapped students. The girls made a Chapter Service Display Project over the party. With that project, they competed at Regionals and they were one of the top 2 scoring groups in that event in the Senior Division (10-12 grade), which means they advance to State and present their project on March 21-23 in Columbia, MO.

Mrs. Dawn Stuedle is the sponsor of FCCLA. At the beginning of the school year she had a meeting for FCCLA and brought up the STAR Events and told anyone who was interested to talk to her after the meeting. She explained, "It was mainly a voluntary thing. I mentioned the STAR Events at the beginning of the year and said they were available and told whomever was interested to talk to me about it, so it was basically self-initiated."

Once those girls mentioned they wanted to do it, Mrs. Stuedle told them to come up with a project to do and they mentioned throwing a party for Mrs. Steele's Life Skills class. "After they threw the party for Mrs. Steele's class, they made about a 12 minute oral presentation over everything they did for the party and made a display with pictures and all kinds of things from the party," said Mrs. Stuedle.

Kirby Stuedle is one of the students who is going to State for FCCLA. She explained, "We threw a winter party for the Special Oplympics kids and made a tri-fold over it and presented it at Regionals. We were competing against 8 others schools, so I was really excited when I found out we were advancing on to State. I didn't expect it at all."

Lindsay Thompson is another member of the team.  She explained more about the project itself. "For our project we threw a winter party for the Special Olympics students and we made crafts, played games, and had snacks with them at the party. It was a lot of fun to get to spend time with them. They're really fun to be around. I'm really excited we get to go to State for this, but I'm nervous too. There is going to be a lot more pressure on us than there was at Regionals, but hopefully we do really well."

The party they had was for a good cause. They wanted the Life Skills class to have a lot of fun as well as make a good project out of it. They didn't realize how much fun they would have doing the party, but after they did it, they saw how fun the kids are. They did a great job at Regionals and The Tank wishes you good luck at State!
