For as long as there has been competition, there's been rivalries.  Though the professional rivalries might get the most attention, high school rivalries are often just as intense...at least to the students.

The debate is always who IS the biggest rival? Fans might have their own perspectives, but the athletes definitely have strong opinions.

Some say our biggest rival is Chillicothe or Savannah, but here at Cameron High School the students say otherwise.  Aaron Gould, varsity point guard for boys basketball team, says his rival used to be the Chillicothe Hornets, but now that they have dropped in the rankings, Lafayette is his and the team's biggest rival.  Dakota Phillips agreed with his fellow teammate saying, “For basketball in the last couple of years Lafayette has beat us, so I think that would be my first choice.”

The girl’s basketball team’s rival was the total opposite. Raelene Blanton said, “Lathrop, because it is always a close game and I don’t like those types of games. I like the ones where we come out and dominate on the court.”

Kelly Thompson agreed saying, “Lathrop is the type of game that makes us work hard and always ends up a close match.”

It is a completely different story for wrestling.  Laura Uthe, mother of Blake and Garrett, has been involved with Cameron wrestling for years now.  She thinks Platte County has to be one of our biggest rivals.  “Most of Platte County kids wrestle year round and they are always tough.”

Sawyer Marley adds Brookfield to the mix saying, “They have been a good team for a long time and are always one of the hardest duals.”

So who is Cameron’s biggest rival?  It seems that depends on the sport, can vary from year to year, and just depends on who you ask.  If we were to ask this question of other schools I am sure “Cameron Dragons” name would come up often, and that is just the way we like it.
