Last year, Broadway Nights was met with positive reviews from the audience. Jazz Choir is looking forward to Cabaret Night being just as successful this year. -

Looking for a little entertainment? CHS Jazz Choir has just the thing! With the success of Broadway Nights in 2008 and 2009, Jazz Choir is bringing it back, but with a twist this year. Instead of just Broadway music, Jazz Choir is exploring other genres and transforming the show into Cabaret Night.

"It seemed to be something that the community had a favorable outlook on," Jazz Choir Director Brian von Glahn said about the original Broadway Nights, which first started out as a fundraiser to help send the group to sing at Carnegie Hall in New York City two years ago. "A lot of people liked it and asked if we had planned on doing it again. It was a great experience for students, too, because they got the opportunity to go through the actions of putting together an entire show rather than just, 'Here are some songs to sing.' They got to do the business side of it and really take care a lot of ins and outs."

Jazz Choir Member Abbie Barker agreed. "[The shows] are fun and and a great experience to be involved in," she said. "I like the dancing and the whole performing aspect of it all."

Though Jazz Choir is bringing different genres to the table, the show will still consist of mainly Broadway. The music will include songs from Hairspray, Dreamgirls, Young Frankenstein, Footloose, Ragtime, and many, many more.

"We've got a lot of different music selections this year," said Mr. von Glahn. "One of them that I'm kind of excited about and some of the stuff that we'll be throwing in this show is a song called Trashin' The Camp from Tarzan. I think there will be some excitement going on with what's going to happen at the beginning of that song."

Aside from large group numbers, there will be many solos and small ensembles throughout the show. For example, Abbie will be singing Don Juan from Smokey Joe's Cafe.

"I'm excited about my solo and honestly all the dance numbers," she said. "I just think it is a really cool show and I'm glad we get to put it on. Every one should definitely come and see it."

Jazz Choir has been working long and hard to get ready for the show. Some practices start as early as 9 am and many don't end until after 5 pm. Yet aside from all the work and all the stress that come with rehearsals, members of Jazz Choir still find a way to have a good time. They know it will all pay off in the end.

"It is fun to be able to get out on stage and use your talents," said Abbie.

Cabaret Night opens on January 16 at 8 pm at Goodrich Auditorium. Tickets go on sale January 6. The cost is $9 and seating is reserved. So if you're looking for a night of singing, dancing, costumes and fun, reserve your seats now and come see the show while supporting Jazz Choir.
