Sometimes students don't like the classes that they are in, so at semester they are allowed to transfer into other classes or change their schedule. Even though it may give you more freedom when you are allowed to change your classes, there are still restrictions on it.

"Students are not allowed to drop classes that are required to graduate--the classes that you take have to give you the 28 credits needed to graduate. Class changes are only permitted within the first four days of the semester," said CHS counselor Mrs.Grossman. "The only exception to this rule is if a student were placed in the wrong class."

Being able to transfer out of classes allows students to try out a class for one semester, then transfer out if they don't like the class or need to take a different one.

Most teachers are fine with the system. "I am fine with kids being able to transfer out of classes during semester or early in the year as long as they are doing it for the right reasons, not just because they don't like the teacher or their friends are in a different class," said Mrs. Stuedle.

On the other hand, students could be missing out on learning the things from the first semester of the classes they are transferring in to. This could cause the student to fall behind or not be able to understand what they are learning. "I think transferring into a full year class at semester makes it harder for students to get caught up with what we are learning," said Science Teacher Angel Stebbins.

Being able to transfer out of classes allows students a chance to get out of classes they don't like instead of having to stay in that class throughout the entire school year. It also allows them the chance to fix anything that might be wrong with their schedule at the beginning of the school year.

So students, don't forget if you need to make a change to your schedule grab the paperwork as quickly as possible when school resumes on January 6.  Remember, your parents have to sign it as well and you only have four days, so make sure you come back ready to take care of business for any class changes.
