Having S.W.A.T. in your class can be heart pounding, either in excitement or dread. Mr. David Mayne's G-1 Law and You class did just that on Tuesday, October 20, but all were excited to see them.

Law and You is a class only for Juniors and Seniors. It teaches basic introductory of the major areas of law in our legal system. It also teaches students how to use the legal system and how you can use the law to your advantage. S.W.A.T. has been coming to the high school for four years now. They first came when Mr. Mayne became a Social Studies teacher here in Cameron.

Other guest speakers have come to talk to the class. The police have come in four other times. On the first day there was a street cop and the school resource officer, the second day officers came in and focused on drinking and driving, on the third day the S.W.A.T. came in, and then on the fourth day a detective came in and talked to the students about some of their cases they have worked on.

The officers even provided some hands-on learning for students.  "Students were able to wear goggles which stimulated to what it was like to be drunk and were able to take a field sobriety test," said Cameron High School teacher Mr. David Mayne

When the S.W.A.T. came in, they brought some of their equipment. They brought breaching tools, suits, helmets, ammunition, and flash bangs just to name a few. The team was not allowed to bring any big guns or weapons due to safety concerns, but students were still impressed. It is the S.W.A.T's job to be aware of the legal system and what they can or cannot bring into certain areas or situations.

Having law enforcement in the classroom gives students one on one  time and time to get to know the officers. "The S.W.A.T. showed that they are good leaders and very outgoing." said Senior Matt MCcannon. "Before knowing them, I thought they were more strict.''

A lot of Mr. Mayne's students have talked about going into law school. Many have gone into the military, but none have that have become a police officer to his knowledge. Having speakers come in and talk about the legal system gives the students an extra boost to becoming successful in any field and to know how things work in the real world. The whole point of having the speakers come in is so students can hear and see what actually goes on behind the scenes. The Law and You class opens a new door for young adults and shows the 'ands, ifs, or buts, of the law.
