Every year Cameron residents, old and young, gather to watch the annual powder puff football game and the homecoming bonfire that follows.  The bonfire has been going on for a number of years.  The powder puff game was resurrected about 5 years ago

The powder puff game is a little different then a regular football game.  Instead of guys being the players, girls are the players.  And on the flip side the guys are the cheerleaders. The coaches are the senior football players and the cheer leading coaches are the senior football cheerleaders. The game usually lasts an hour.  StuCo Rep for powder puff  Kyle Smith says, "I'm really looking to powder puff this year because it always ends up as the girls, the guys, and the whole crowd just having a good time."

Following the powder puff game is the traditional bonfire.  Each year the fire gets bigger, better, and more entrenched in the Homecoming tradition. The fire can be built by anyone, but the majority of the people who build are seniors.  After the game and the speaker, the fire is lit by senior football players, senior soccer players, and any senior that helped build the fire. StuCo Rep for the Bonfire, Huston Jack says, "I think we can build a fire that everyone will remember and urge anyone that wants to help to come out and help build the bonfire."

Huston added, "Building the fire is hard, but it's fun and the reward is to get a huge fire."

Even old alumni remember the powder puff and bonfire. CHS Alumni Joe Stretch remembers helping build the bonfire.  Stretch said, "When I helped build it, I really felt like that I was really felt like I was part of the tradition." Stretch's favorite memory about the whole night was lighting the bonfire.

For many, both of these activities are Homecoming traditions.  High School Secretary Janel Jackson remembers even as a little girl going to the bonfire during homecoming.  "I think that they [Powder puff/Bonfire] are a very good idea. It's almost becoming a tradition now with the powder puff game becoming a part of the homecoming festivities," says Ms. Jackson.

"We are one of the few schools that have a bonfire and I'm really glad that it has remained a tradition through all these years," Ms. Jackson said.

Grab your blankets and the family and bring them out to the field on October 1 for a fun filled night of tradition and fun, CHS style!
