I Can't Believe I'm Saying This

As I end my last year of high school this week, I am filled with bittersweet emotions. Of course I will be happy to be done with the most stressful year of my life, but I can't help but think back on the memories I have made here. About a month ago the only thought crossing my mind was, "I can't wait to get out of here!", but now, when I'm at the point that I am, in fact, going to get out of here, my thoughts have changed to "I'm going to miss this place".

I'm going to miss being yelled at by Laura Uthe for not having lunch money. I am going to miss Mr. Mayne's way of forcing his class to see both sides of an argument. I am going to miss Coach Harrold's passion for teaching her students. I am going to miss going to the choir room during seminar and singing from whatever broadway book happened to be out. I am going to miss newspaper class. I am going to miss Mr. Gerber peering into every classroom with a keen eye. I am going to miss reese bars, and biscuits and gravy. I am going to miss listening to classic rock in Mr. Bishop's room. I am going to miss reading books Mrs. Fagan recommends me to. I am going to miss Bart and Glen harassing students. I hate to admit, but I'm going to miss Cameron High School.

If I could give any advice to someone entering high school it would be this:

First off, get involved. I know you think being involved is "uncool" or "lame", but it is really one of the best things to do if you want to survive, and enjoy, high school. I hate it when I hear people say they hate high school when they have never been a part of anything in their school. You have the choice to enjoy high school or not. Join a club or a sport. Don't be afraid to step outside of your box and meet new people. When I was a freshman I wasn't involved much, and I didn't really like school. When I started becoming more involved, I began to enjoy it more, and I have made so many different friends because of the clubs and organizations I am a part of.

Secondly, always choose your friends over relationships. High school is a time where dating is taken too seriously, and if you allow yourself to be sucked into a relationship early on in high school you will lose the people who have always been there for you. Love is not something you can possibly fathom as a freshman in high school. I know you "youngsters" don't think so, but once you reach eighteen you will have a very different outlook on life. You can make so many great friendships in high school. Don't ruin that chance because of some distorted idea of love.

Don't be a jerk just because you're a teenager. I get it, you're an angsty teen! Your life is tough! You are a rebel! All that is fine. Wear your dark clothes and listen to your angsty screamo music, but remember to respect others, especially your teachers. The majority of them genuinely care about you and know how much potential you have. Don't allow yourself to slack off and disrespect others. You are going to really regret it your senior year when you're applying to schools and have nothing to show for the four years you spent in school.

Always respect and appreciate your parents. They are doing the best they can. They will be here for you unconditionally through everything. Don't take for granted what they have given you. Go home when it's your curfew. Don't lie to them. Tell them you love them. No matter how much you may dislike them, your family is your family forever.

Stay true to yourself. It's okay to be different from your friends and try new things, and it's also okay to have values and morals to live by. Do what you enjoy, not what people expect you to enjoy. Stand up for what you think is right. If you don't, who will? If you see something you want changed, do it yourself. Don't wait around for someone to do it.

Lastly, enjoy your high school years. They are gone so quickly. Take risks. Laugh at your mistakes. Never take any moment, or any one, for granted.

Thanks so much for this article. I'm so nervous about entering high school. But now i know it's only as bad as I make it. I pray and hope that you are doing well at the college you go to. I only pray that high school doesn't change who I am. But again, Thank you. It has been very helpful

I wanted to tell you how impressed I am with your column this week. Your “advice” section should be framed and re-published every year for the incoming students. If you decide to go into journalism, I hope you will consider Mizzou’s J-School. Where you go to college DOES make a difference.
