Contary to my co-editor's eating habits, I have a drastically different take on the food I put in my mouth. Sure, I love anything deep fried, battered, covered in cheese, or swimming in caramel sauce, but I try to make a fairly conscious effort to not consume such indulgences on a daily basis.

When I was a kid, soda and candy were not something my mom would keep in the house on a regular basis. Even now when I have friends over I have to make a special trip to the grocery store to stock up on Dr. Pepper and ice cream to keep them satisfied. Our kitchen is typically filled with fruit, yogurt, wheat bread, soy milk, and a lot of cereal. I've had everything from tofu milkshakes to vegetarian lasagna. It's okay, I can already hear the hippie jokes coming.

Let me tell you, I love food. I watch the Food Network like it's a religion. I drool over Sweet Al's sugar cookies. I absolutely swoon at even the thought of digging into an order of chicken nachos at El Maguey. But it's a rare day when I will give in and eat them. Just last week I decided to give in and eat the ever delicious biscuits and gravy at CHS, and one of my friends looked at me in total shock. It's not a weight issue I'm worried about, but an issue of health. I feel so much better knowing what I'm putting in my body not only tastes good, but is good for me also.

I am always dumbfounded when lunchtime comes around and the majority of the student body's trays are filled with pizza, french fries, two oatmeal creme pies, and Powerade. Do these kids know they are consuming enough calories to last them through breakfast AND lunch?!

I'll admit, deep down inside I feel a twinge of jealousy seeing these kids consume half their body weight in artificial, processed snack cakes and still remain as skinny as a rail. If I had those kinds of eating habits I would have to be lifted out of my house with a crane. Then I begin thinking about getting diabetes and heart disease when I'm older and the twinge subsides. I suppose that's where my co-editor (and childhood friend) and I are different: he tends to live in the present, while I'm constantly worried about the future. I can't really say if that's a bad thing or not. After all, if we meet again after going our separate ways, he'll probably be the one being removed from his house with a crane as I look on with my granola bar.
