The kids grab a bite to eat after giving blood. -

Cameron FFA is out for blood again with the community blood drive at Cameron Highschool. The bi-annual drive was a little bit under par this year, however, with both blood givers and blood supply seeing a drop in numbers.

"We have the event twice a year, and this year is not quite as good as we have had in years past. The number of students who are giving is a lot lower than it has been in years past, which isn't good because the blood supply is very low as well," said FFA Sponsor Mrs. Buller. But this wasn't about to stop Cameron FFA from putting on the drive.

Wednesday, February 18 the multi purpose room was transformed into Dracula's dream come true. A few first time givers were a little nervous, but this didn't stop them from giving. "I'm not really a big fan of needles but it isn't really about me so I give anyway," said junior Scott Walser.

The general idea the giver comes second was a shared sentiment with many of the volunteers.

"I give because it's a very easy way to help someone out. It doesn't bother me to give blood and it makes me feel good knowing I can help, even if it is in a small way", said Senior and third time giver Eric Dice. It is always nice to see people coming together for a good cause, and it's even better to see the community pitch in a little bit. Giving blood takes its toll on the body, and when all is said and done donors need to replenish the nutrients they lost while giving. In comes the community!

"We are thankful the community gave what it did. We had pizza from Casey's and some chicken from KFC for lunch. Countrymart gave a sub-sandwich and MyStore gave drinks for the day," said Freshman Azalee Morgan, who helped organize the event with the FFA. "It was quit a bit of food and we are thankful for the donations made by the stores."

Between the food, the extra credit, and a little time out of the classroom it was a decent experience for all involved. As usual everything went smoothly with few hiccups throughout the day.

"It wasn't nearly as bad as most of the people I had talked to said it was going to be. Everything went very smooth when I gave, and I was given extra credit in honors biology so there really isn't anything to complain about with my experience," said junior Scott Walser.

Although the blood drive won't be coming to the high school again this year, keep your eyes out for opportunities to give at other events. There's always next year though, so make sure to keep hydrated and healthy so you can help the Community Blood Center and Cameron FFA next year.
