At-a-glance

As I walked out of my house last weekend wrapped up in multiple layers, a coat, a hat, and gloves, a frigid gust of 30 mph wind slapped me across the face, bringing me to the realization winter hated me just as much as I hated it. It was not the reward I was hoping for after braving the most depressing season known to mankind.

I remember as a child waking my parents up in the morning asking, "Is it Spring yet?" While I enjoyed snow just like any kid, I could only stay out for twenty minutes or so before I was sick of feeling like an immobile, damp, marshmallow. I would rather be tromping through the grass barefoot eating a popsicle than putting on seven pairs of socks only to discover my feet would never be warm so long as there was snow on the ground. My hatred for winter began at a young age and only progressed.

Nowadays, all my friends know of my severe dislike for the chilly months. My fellow co-editor, and childhood friend, Caleb, loves to tease me about it whenever possible, and usually when I'm least expecting it, like between classes when I hear a voice behind me saying, "Morgan did you notice it's snowing outside?" Before I can turn around for him to see my scowl he's already laughing.

Why do people like winter so much anyway? That's one of life's unanswered questions, right? How could anyone possibly enjoy sub zero temperatures, scraping ice off their car, and actually having to "get dressed" to go outside? What's so fun about being cooped up inside, getting a cold, and shoveling your sidewalk? I get it, you think snow is beautiful. I'm sure that's the first thought coming to mind as you try desperately to get your car out of the snow drift Old Man Winter left you the night before.

It's usually around the holiday season I begin to miss summer and everything it brings. Not that I dislike the holidays, I truly enjoy them, but I would probably trade them off if it meant another few months of 80 degree temperatures and green grass. There is just something so appealing to me about humidity, sunburns, fresh cut grass, chlorine, and blinding sunshine I can never get from winter. So for all you Jack Frosts out there, I hope you are enjoying your winter wonderland! I'll be hibernating until March.
