Salve! So half of your probably don't know what that means, but that is Latin for hello, and a word added to a handful of students' vocabulary who attended a Roman-themed night Wednesday, December 3. This was an enrichment opportunity and hands-on learning experience to better understand Roman life. Any boy or girl in a World History class was welcome to come and participate, with an incentive for up to thirty bonus points.

History teacher Mrs. Harrold put the whole thing together. About twenty students showed up.

The night began with a fashion show. Allison Ziekle sported a stolla and sandals. Emily Webster came decked out in a gladiator uniform. A bunch of other students dressed up in togas. Next, everyone sat in a circle on pillows, much how the Romans would lounge and eat. In the center of the ring was a variety of Roman-like foods made by students. Sophomore Brooke Bradshaw brought bread and olive oil to dip it in, pita bread, hummus, and the infamous olives that are frequently linked to the Romans. Sophomores Brandy McClure and Kathy O'Donnell made breadsticks and chicken fingers. Sophomore Phillip Bond brought bread and cheese. Dates and cinnamon eggs were also in the circle.

"My favorite food was defiantly the breadsticks," said Sophomore Kenzee Cann.

After sampling the food, students got a paper with english words translated into Latin. "Tace", be quiet, "canis meus id comedit", my dog ate it, "pulchra puella", pretty girl, and "die fulce fruere", have a nice day, were a few of the words.

"'Recedite, plebes! Gero rem imperialem'; better understood as 'stand aside, little people! I am here on official business'", said Sophomore Emily Webster as she got ready for the 'chair'iot races. Chariot races were the most popular sport in Rome. These races were much more violent then the ones held in the CHS hallways.

"We sat in rolly chairs, and had the weightlifting belts on and we tied jump ropes on them and rolled," said Kenzee, "The races were my favorite. It was so much fun. It was really dangerous but I enjoyed it alot."

The race began in the senior hallway, and went around the "T", and finished back in the senior hallway. History teacher Mr. Anderson was in the front hallway to surrveliance the race. Contestants held on to the ropes tied to their partners, and took off when Mrs. Harrold said "go". Three pairs went at a time. It was quite a show, everyone took off full speed. Around the first corner a few people crashed but they were soon back in the race again. Elijah Hall and Travis Shuebel were in the lead when one of the wheels fell off and they went down. Mylon Dice and Patrick Lohman sped past them and won the first heat. Two more heats down and then came the finals. Mylon Dice and Patrick Lohman, Tyler Daniel and Phillip Bond, and Jessie Blanton and ? were the last ones standing. Jessie and ? won. They were crowned with leaf crowns.

After the races, everyone watched the movie Gladiator, and got a cinematic look on gladiator life. The night was an educational, yet exciting experience. A sure success!
