An exciting weekend of bowling has produced a state championship high school team. BGA rose to defeat rival St. Benedict of Auburndale 14-13 in a close competition that brought out the best in our BGA bowlers. On Friday, Casey Pope won his second state individual championship in three years with a resounding victory in the Division II State Individual Finals. Entering the day in third place, Casey went 4-0-1 in the round robin portion of the finals and took a 50-pin lead into the championship match. Since 30 bonus points are awarded for a match win, Casey’s opponent needed to beat him by 20 pins in order to take the crown. Casey put it all to rest by winning the matchup easily 209-128.
The team then bowled in the state quarterfinals against Lausanne in the afternoon. Casey bowled a 691 series, and Dallas Hill bowled a 632 series in leading the Wildcats to a 16-11 victory
Saturday, January 29th, The BGA bowling team bounced rival DCA 16-11 in the semifinals before defeating St. Benedict of Auburndale 14-13 in the championship match to win its first bowling team title. In the semifinals, the team bowled its high pinfall of the season with a 3495. Casey Pope bowled a 717 series, and Dallas Hill bowled 648. Way to go WIldcats!
The championship match was tied 4-4 after game 1 before Dallas Hill pushed the Wildcats in front with a 278 in the second game. The 'Cats led 9-7 after two games. Despite dropping a tightly-contested final game, the Wildcats had too big of a lead in total pinfall for St. Benedict to come back. Clayton Hines made it official with his first ball of the 10th frame. Needing 4 pins, he got 7, and the celebration was on.
Congrats to all the Wildcat bowlers!!
