Teen Boards: Growing in Power
Brentwood Youth Leadership Group - Youth Leadership Brentwood

Throughout the United State, teen boards are starting to grow in number and in power. One such organization, called Rainbow Promotions, is a major political teen board across the east coast. This program started in 1990. The program was designed for students ages of 13 to 18 to represent their local malls producing fashion shows. They are now in their 15th year. The program regulates four teen boards as well as a group called “Music and Dance”. This is  another program designed for teens to get out of the house and into the local community of dance and music. This organization is a major example of local teen leaders and boards making a difference in their society.

In our area, there is Leadership Franklin and Leadership Brentwood. Leadership Franklin and leadership Brentwood are non-profit organizations in which local politicians, historians, and other leaders share their work experiences with a group of teens specially chosen as leaders in their school and community.  The students typically represent a range of socio-economic levels in the community and come from both public and private schools.   These groups attend several sessions throughout the school year and experience the work of leaders in their community.   At the end of the semester, the large group is split into four small groups of students. They must work on a project of some kind to present on the day of graduation when other awards, scholarships, and recognitions are given away. In the past, BGA has been well-represented by high-caliber students who have gone on to garner many awards and scholarships.  Students representing Youth Leadership Franklin this year include:  Lindsay Landrum, Tyler Lawrence, Tyler Ragsdale, Sydney Eddy, John Adgent, Kinsey Sessions, and Cody Evins.   Students representing BGA in Youth Leadership Brentwood are Becca Guthrie, Stephen Pintauro and Daniel Pintauro.  These organizations prepare these students with knowledge of the issues facing their community as well as the  inner-workings of city government and local businesses.

BGA is equally well-represented with teen boards.   The Upper School Student Council consists of two students in each class who have been chosen to represent the student body interests as a whole. The council deliberates on what changes the school needs to make to provide the students with an educational; and yet, enjoyable, high school experience. Another teen board BGA has is the Honor Council. Through the recommendation of faculty, the Board of Trustees and fellow students, those students chosen for The Honor Council  live by example and  uphold the esteemed Honor Code.  Students on the Honor Council hear cases involving students who have committed offenses against the Honor Code. They then deliberate with Mr. McElroy on the punishment of the student equal to the offense.  Many other small groups from sports to speech and debate team make up the BGA teen student body. These teen groups are what make BGA such a great school to attend.

Teen Boards across America are becoming more popular. Students want a larger say of what happens in the society they live in.  Societies that provide programs and groups for teen populations join are rewarded by a group of students who are motivated to get involved in the communities they live and work in. School that provide avenues for students to take part in the planning, discipline and governing of the school are rewarded through students taking a moral stake in their school community as well.   Through these avenues, teenagers are starting to take a major part in society, job employment, and their education.
